I've often thought of photography as being subtractive in nature as opposed to painting which is additive. The painter starts with a blank canvas and applies paint until he considers his work finished. A photographer starts with the chaos and confusion of reality and excludes things until he has simplified to the essentials. That's certainly what you've done here.

Geometrical shapes, such as circular , lend themselves to photographic composition because of the way they interact with rectangle of the picture frame, here in this ruin temple, inner and outer shape are all at great work, and they create tension in the composition. Another great simplicity image of geometrical use..well done........
Dear, Hugo, regarding your yesterday comments about ?horizon tilted?. yes I agree with you ,offcourse..I had a snatched shot, taken with a wide angle lens, which as you know left the horizon with a noticeable tilt, disturbing the serenity of the image. Some like it as it is others no, what can be done is ,by rotating a crop ,it is possible to correct the horizon, although as you know, you do have to sacrifice the marginal areas of the image, but some software allows you to give a precise figure for the rotation, others require to do it by eye, and if the image been scanned ?like mine? some software gives you the facility to rotate the image while scanning, thanks a lot .

ja hugo,het is inderdaad het twentekanaal,ik heb geen USM gebruikt en ook niet de
(posterising) optie.
het enige wat ik toen heb gedaan is een beetje desaturation omdat er veel licht was die dag, en de kleuren waren waren erg vel!
ik weet het hugo het valt niet mee om photo s honderd procent te maken!
ik denk dat wel 90 procent van usefilm met photo shop werken

Very nice curves in this image! Quite harsh light, the left part is even a bit washed out but I guess that if you want to keep detail in the shadows, this is the best you could do under given conditions. Do you also have a version with lower exposure? Would be nice for comparison, I think it would not look bad either. Cropping the lightest part is not really an option, that would harm the well-balanced composition...

It would have caught my eye also and did in fact as a thumbnail or I would not be commenting now, so ... please allow me to express myself even with taken the liberty of a remake and possibly being frowned upon:
1. First things first of course ... the three distinct parts of this image, (the 'Blue' sky, the 'Hot' earth, and the 'Dark' shadows), are definitely a distinctive contrast in relation to each other, but ...
a. Is the blue not blue enough?
b. Is the hot a bit too hot especially on the left border?, ... and
c. Are the shadows dark enough?
These are just three 'little' questions I ask myself and probably has alot to do with this 400-Speed Film you seem to be 'hooked' on.
2. While the curviature of the shadow is indeed 'eye-catching' and the top right and lower left is almost ideally equi-distant from their respective border coorners in a 'Rule Of Quarters' instead of thirds, I have been very tempted as per the attached, (but 'necessarily' so), to crop a bit of 'Hot' earth area off the left margin and appropriately with the 'Cooler' area of the bottom border bringing this shadow straight to the corner further enhancing the term Geometry ... Yes/No?
Furthermore, I added just a tad of sharpness, contrast, and a inner complimentary border to match the Hot Sand in trying to psychologically reduce the inner heat 'spots' of which there are some to the eye of the viewer.
Was all that okay with you at all? I honestly hope so ... 5/5/6/6/5.

Triple circle!! Great composition, Hugo! I like this image very much. Great contrasts, you did not lose detail in either one, light or dark. Love the golden earth tones with
the blue. I must say, you have a very good eye for 'seeing' the best compositions and shapes!

nice curve. I like the composition very much, but in my own opinion I would crop a bit of the bottom, just a bit - to balance more the amount of sky/shadow ...I think I may be writing rubbish... is perfect!

I am thinking about this - what if it were in black and white - it is hot and deserty now and if you go hot and deserty - there are some things to be said for some of Sunset's observations...however, if you want something more religious in tune with the subject black and white might work better...
