This is the first sunset shot I've taken with this new camera. Still learning the controls - I think I metered incorrectly on this. Please help!

Lynda, I would not say that you metered incorrectly... The sky is exposed very well. The foreground is dark, but that is a consequence of the large contrast in the scene. You could have overexposed (or measure light on the foreground) but in this case the sky would probable be bleached out (or at least be less colourful). If you really would like to have detail in the foreground and in the sky in this situation, you should use a gradual neutral density filter. This is a filter which is transparent on one side and darker on the other side. If you then put the dark side on top, the foreground will appear lighter compared to the sky.

Thanks for the helpful comments guys! I think I must have metered closer to the sun than I should have, will definitely try out both suggestions.
