About To continue where we left off....;-) This series is composed of the first few shots I've ever taken with my Yashica. Other than framing no PS work, the tone is deliberately printed this way. Your comments are, as always appreciated...

The atmosphere of playing cards.

Castillion .   {K:1570} 3/24/2004
Hello Hugo :) How dou feel on "brand new" Usefilm ;) ? I like atmosphere of this photo, it's so gamble... Very nice tonning and DOF, only one thing distracting me: contrast; I thing "more" dark tones on foto will be create stronger effect. Cheers!

Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 3/24/2004
Usefilm is sort of up and running for me, but sometimes the results are not appropriate. I will try a critique and see what happens. There is more happenning and more to interest the viewer in this one. The inclusion of more than one set of hands illustrates the theme of games or competition better. You certainly started you Yashica's career with a novel subject. Now I have to figure out how usefilm works!

Nuno Murias   {K:5311} 3/24/2004
Excelent capture of the mood of a card game!

Carmem A. Busko   {K:48763} 3/24/2004
Hi, Hugo, new UF is not working well... you can't believe me, your name is not appearing above...
This detail you'd chosen is perfect to illustrate a card game and very well captured, as always!
Thank you for your comment!
Greets,
Carmem

Dan Lightner   {K:12684} 3/24/2004
Very good use of shallow DOF ,Black and White is very fitting

Thamer T.   {K:1465} 3/24/2004
The tone fits the image really well, great DOF/focus although I think it would have been better to focus on the hand on the left (with the cards) because thats where the attention is.

Well done...

Zsolt Radákovits   {K:7763} 3/24/2004
Hi Hugo!

Very good abstract!!!
Congratulation for the excellent play with the DOF! Superb composition.

Thanks for you kind comments I received it 3 times. There were some problem with the new Surface. I was dissatisfied with it at the very begining. But it works and seems good now.

Lex Bronkhorst   {K:14152} 3/24/2004
Groeten, Lex..

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47458} 3/24/2004
I like the dizzy back ground lights, it will give great effect with more sharp details of the left hands and the "holding" cards, to me darker will results in stronger effect in the middle main object, ?hands with cards?, regards, Saeed

Hugo, (where's your name?) this one is also very interesting! I like the sense of motion it has.
Again, I like the tones, very nice. And it's really nice to see something that is truly different and original. Good work!

Lori :)

Interesting... just the hands this time. i was fascinated by the disembodied hands in the first one. this gives it a whole different feel. i also agree with Saeed regarding the "dizzy" lights. to me it looks as if a cylon centurion is sitting in the shadows watching the game. which brings me to the coolest part of the image: the contrast. not just color contrast but the contrast between moving objects and still ones. very cool effect. well done, hugo! btw, what is that i see right in front of me at the bottom of the frame?? is that the top of a bald head?? nice touch ;^)

John Hatziemmanouil   {K:40580} 3/24/2004
Hallo Hugo. This is nice. I like here the focal length that works on the background's hands only. Also the difference of the lighting between the hands. Cheers!

P. Christine Skinner   {K:27348} 3/24/2004
Excellent atmosphere and mood capture made perfect in B/W. Great movement.

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 3/24/2004
Oh No! Not another Hugo photo as featured critic, top photo or whatever! I thought that with the new look we normal people might have a chance, but no. Hugos booked it again. SERIOUSLY well done. You know i always like looking at you work! Congrats. I came across your website the other day by accident. Really nice.
Greetings from your friend in the mountains.
Neil

Gary Cardinal   {K:1500} 3/25/2004
Hi, this shot reminds me of an early b&w movie, I would prefer more range of tone but I do like the image, very original. Regards Gary

Purplehat Bagger   {K:39} 3/25/2004
Well its black and white (nice) but it looks like a still from Citizen Kane and we have all seen that film. Its nothing to shout about.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/25/2004
I haven't seen that one, nor am I shouting about it. Please clarify yourself... Would like to know why you don't like it.

Telmo Domingues   {K:9639} 3/25/2004
HI dear Hugo!
I've benn away... And I'll be for some days... Anyway there is still a little time to catch some good momentes on the net... like this one!
Good photo, with a good environment, lighting, croping and DOF... Miss you guys!

al shaikh   {K:15779} 3/25/2004
Middle right is too hot, needs to be burnt, the out of focus area is a bit too out of focus and distracts the eye.

Sunset Man   {K:10213} 3/25/2004
Oooh! ... Ouch! The 'Master', (Al), has spoken ... beware!

B:)liana    {K:30945} 3/26/2004
Great lighting and love this dance of the hands. Great work here dear Hugo, only the first blur hand in foreground is distracting my concept, but great work
Congratulations

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/27/2004
Hi Al, See what you mean, and on all technical aspects you are right. This series was an experiment to convey an atmosphere, extensively thought through before composing and taking this shot. I used a camera I hadn't used before, and am still learning to work with. The atmosphere, however, did come out (almost) as planned: the intensity of a nervewrecking game of cards with high stakes in a smokey, badly lit, obscure playing room. This being the objective of this shot, does that change your view?

Cheers,

Hugo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 5/11/2004
I love you b/w series, Hugo. the DOF is great here, I like the tonal range and the differences between the overexposed right and the dark background a lot. powerful! cheers, thilo

Marion Luijten   {K:6172} 7/4/2004
This series is SUPER! You really captured the atmosphere very well. Good in B&W, this wouldn't have worked in colour.

Bryce Hughes   {K:2957} 8/26/2004
Very cool Hugo,
I love absolutely everything about this, the mood, tones, contrast, composition. I can feel the tension!!! Feels like a 70's ganster invite only night hehe :)

Patrick Jacobson   {K:29151} 10/7/2004
Going through your portfolio! =)

What a great shot.. really love the moody feeling.. i can feel the smoke from the cigars and the breath of liqour. Great toning.. really love those.. very special and very analog! I love the composition with the hands and cards... works perfectly.. the light is almost magical.

Very good shot my friend.. really great!! =) 7++
