About This is one of our backyard male downy woodpeckers. He let me get to within 8-9 feet of him. Every time the wind would blow and rotate the suet feeder and place the bird on the back side, I would take a step closer.

Excellent capture, Brian. I've been trying to get a shot of a Pileated Woodpecker(North America's largest)but I can never seek up close enought to get a desent one.

i am originally from new jersey and the downy woodpecker was always one of my favorites... reminds me of my mother, she kept a suet feeder for them. congrats! very nice photo; for they are shy creatures. nice work - jen
