| About |
This is my EX-fiance, Jessie, at her apartment. My attempt at a good portrait shot..I'm not too good at them and the lighting was somewhat poor. I cropped out her dog, also. What do you think? Thanks.

It's a nice informal portrait and she's quite photogenic. To improve it, I would have removed the multi-coloured (rug?) in the bottom left corner and fluffy white thing behind her head as they're a little distracting, had the plane of focus on her face a little sharper and blurred the background with a larger aperture (reduced DOF). If the crop weren't so tight, you could have kept all these things in, because then it would become an "environmental portrait" to show the subject in her natural surroundings, which tells the viewer something about her character. The tight crop shows you're trying to concentrate just on her, which is why these other elements should be reduced. If you're taking close portraits with this lens, try to do it at the zoom end (ie closer to 80mm) as the wide end will exagerate facial features that may not be what you want.

Richard, thank you for the long comment. I really appreciate your insight. I'll keep in mind the difference between "environmental" portraits and the closer ones. I agree, the other elements in the tight crop do distract. It was an informal portrait though..more of a spurr of the moment thing. But thanks again for the insight..I am always looking for ways to improve. Regards, ~Lucas
