About Taken at Shipwrecks beach in Poipu, Kauai last Summer. I took several images from this evening and on this shoot that are usable. In this case, I am curious to hear your opinions on the people in the scene. Normally I tend to shy away from leaving them in there, but in this instance I believe they may add an extra element that works. I used my tripod and cable release to allow for some water movement and admittedly was surprised at how sharp the people were even though the shutter is quite slow...approx 1/4 of a second. Your comments and opinions are always appreciated. www.hawaiianphotos.net

Dear Vincent, I love sonsets and your composition is wonderful. I pesonally like the special mood combined with the dynamic of the water - it's a very good effect. Congratulatin for this outstanding shot !

At first I didnt even notice that there were people. I have seen an eroding beach in South Carolina that had tree stump uprights that were quiet tall (Hunting Island). So I thought they weres something like that. For me, I would like to see them much larger....but really the photo is about the light and the water and people dont need to be in the shto to give me a feeling of both wanting to be there myself and to feel that your photo has brought me there. regards, Bill Gibson

Beautiful shot. There's a very dramatic feel about it that I really like. The colors are great. The long exposure is nice too, I like what it does to the water. Good job.

Regards.

Awesome image. The people are fine and give a sense of scale. The movement in the water is fantastic. Well done. Lou

Vince,

A tripod eh? Buddy you have nailed this one. The colors are something I would not expect to see in a "normal" Hawaiian shot. The sky and rocks appear to be on fire. The motion of the water caught with the long exposure sets this one off. Wonderful shot buddy, Is it for sell?
Aloha my friend,

Russ

Vince, the sense of motion with the foreground water mimicking the clouds is fantastic. I, too, am not a fan of people in landscape shots and I don't think it helps this photo to have them in it. I am sure it will be a 'sellable' shot. Well done.

I love the water motion coming right at me! I feel like I need to jump back so I don't get wet!! Wonderful composition and gorgeous warm tones.

Vincent, this is a beautiful landscape that totally captures the beach feeling in Kauai. I've been to this very beach, so it is really special to see it so beautifully captured. I am in agreement that this image does not need the people in it. The image is incredibly detailed with the water motion and the rich sunset. Instead of looking at all the detail, I find myself trying to figure out what the people are doing.

It is so good to see your posts here! I'm glad you showed us this one.

I'm not at all against having people in landscape shots, but I feel the human element in this photo is too far away, even for a sense of scale. Putting aside the people issue, this is a great capture. I particularly like (as was mentioned above) how the clouds seem to be moving in sync with the water. And then there's the orange highlights in the waves! I think zooming out just a touch wider would allow the viewer to see the tips of the water on the sand in the midground, which might emphasize the "blooming" effect of the water even more.

Thanks for all of your comments on this image. I see a variety of opinions too. As a landscape photographer I have many, many images without a trace of human beings. And for obvious reasons I prefer most all this way. However, in this case, I am not convinced that this one is better off without the people. First of all they are obviously not the focus of the image here, but rather just a very small part. I still believe that their presence in this case might still be a plus rather than a negative. The idea, or hope behind this is to create a feeling of I wish I were there. One possible thought is that I use a 22 inch monitor. When I view this image at the medium size, I would feel the same as a few opinons that they are too small to add any value. Either way, I sent this one out for print proofs this past Monday. Once I receive those then perhaps I'll be in a better position to decide for sure. I also have many other images from this same shoot (many much closer to the rock wall) that do not have any people which may be actually better. But it is the added presence OF the people in this case that hopefully adds a unique element that can work. I greatly appreciate all of you taking the time. This is a great way to learn. Many mahalos to you all. Aloha!

Outrageously great!

Fantastic image and I love the effect the wide-angle lens has on the rushing waves.

I'm a bit ambivalent about the people in the image. My eye keeps getting drawn to them when I really want to be swept away by that fantastic sea and sky. I think Joe Cornish may be right when he says that a human in a landscape immediately becomes the subject of the picture and so I suppose it depends whether your aim is to examine the landscape or our place in it.
