Featured Critique This is an outstanding capture of an emotional moment, puntuated by the clutching of the hand that is skillfully framed in the center of the composition. You could almost feel the little girl pulling down on it with all her strength and determination. I also like the adult perspective looking down on the child, whose face is partially revealed. I don't know why she is crying, but I am intrigued by her gown, which looks like a party dress or a ballerina outfit. Perhaps she was experiencing stage-fright or simply didn't want to leave a festive party with her playmates. Would love to know the story behind the image. Outstanding job, Dina. 6.5+ rating

Hi George, this is my daughter and she was having a REALLY bad day so we attempted to cheer her up with playing "dress up". Needless to say, this didn't work. I was leaving to go to the store and it was just more than she could handle that day ! Sorry there is not a better story behind it -- it was a "bad hair day" ;-)
Thanks for your generous comments. I wasn't sure how this one would go over...

While it didn't work in cheering her up, it definately works as a photo documentary. It's on par with your other image titled "A Sad Day" in terms of its raw emotion. Well done.

I can really feel this one. I absolutely love it. It's one of those moments every parent has but are so rarely recorded. Emotional and very well caught.

WOW! Tons of emotion. I had to go through this "Daddy don't go" thing just last year when I was sent over. You caught that feeling quite well. Very nicely done.

Wow....congrats on the exposure to your photographs that sooo deserve it! I think it's fair to say that anyone who has looked over your portfolio can see that it is steeped in shots which offer tender and sometimes emotional glimpses into the lives of everyday children. You must have a magical way of working with them (though in this shot, the magic might have been taking a coffee break) because they typically exhibit none of the standard camera fright, shyness, or smugness. Nor do they appear "posed". What I love the most about your work, is your ability to situate the subject thru cropping and framing, with perfection. The balance of the shots is usually perfect, and your B&W tones are extraordinary. BRAVO! ...Brad

This is just the sort of portrait I love to see. Its real. Its not posed. It tells a story. You can look at it and know that you have been on both sides of that story at some time in your life. It is excellent. More of these please Dina. I would rate this 10 out of 7.

Dina,
I know your work just by looking at the thumbprint. It's so uniquely yours that I was saying your name as the image was blowing up on my screen.
Awesome work, everything you do is so moving, I'm immediately drawn to your stuff.

You did a wonderful job capturing the emotion here... I love how the tutu finishes off the bottom frame also.
Very nice 'departure from your norm' at that! Brianna

It may be abnormal for you, but it is powerful and thought provoking. You captured the intense emotion in the scene very well and created a historical moment of the intransigent expression of the child. It tears at my heart!

I think it was a good idea to post this one. Yes it is outside your typical image, but it still shows so much about what children are about. There is nothing negative about it. Only people who don't have kids might missinterpret it as a negative image where something bad happens. I have one of those in my portfolio, too and sometimes I'm tempted to add more in that category. But then just like you I'm not sure if people understand it the right way.
I called mine "the end of the world" because I think this is how my daughter must have felt that moment. Maybe I should do a series where I show all the extreme phases a typical child at the age of 2-3 years gones through in a matter of only a couple of minutes. From total joy to "end of days" and back to happy again.
Anyway, I think this photo is very good as it shows the emotion very good without making it "full frontal". You preserved her dignity :)
