About The first few shots with my D100, taken last sunday at a field hockey match. Hockey is a fast moving game, and I enjoyed toying with the 135-400 mm lens and the camera.

The game was pretty important and turned rough as the tension mounted.

Part II: The penalty
Exact settings: 1/2000' @ f4.8, 200 ASA, -0,5 EV Zoom 155 mm. Full frame.

Your comments, as always, are appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

JUst a suggestion either show the people in full or crop them away. Good photo. Regards, Rob.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/22/2004
Hi Rob, Good point. Not something within my span of control, though. I did consider including the spectators in the background (different shot), but that would unbalance the composition even more, so I decided to go for this one.

Thanks...

Cheers,

Hugo

dag hugo, je heb de foto op de juiste moment
genomen!
mijn complimenten hier voor,
groet riny

Verena Rentrop   {K:14424} 5/22/2004
the first impression is also a lot of headless spectators ;)

but the main interest is in the agressive reaction on the yellow card, good captured

Cheers,
Verena

@All:

This is actually a triptych on it's own. Maybe I should've posted the three consecutive shots.

I have to agree with the cut off heads of the spectators. Guess I was focussing on the game and the moment. I'll keep it in mind the next time! Thanks for your comments,

Groeten,

Hugo

What attract my attention in this image two things,1-the yellow card as of the referee sticking it, on the mouth of the player saying no more shouting,,2- the spectators, lost their heads by Hugo, preventing them not to see match tension, lol, excellent temper image, very interesting ,Saeed

Carmem A. Busko   {K:48763} 5/22/2004
Hugo, if I were asn excellent photographer like you do, I?d try not to crop people heads away.. but I?m not...
Excellent colors and definition!
Enjoy your camera!
Carmem

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 5/22/2004
Excellent scene, Hugo. Colors, contrast and and details are great. About the comp: I love to see the yellow card in the middle of the player's face. It's obviously not easy to make the right cops here. the outlined player on the right disturbs me somehow - but he casts a shadow ( heavy PS?). About the specators' heads: not so sure about it. the shifted line in front of them is something I would definitely work on. cheers, thilo

Rawabi Al-Nuaimi   {K:15659} 5/22/2004
lol.. i like the composition.. their anger is pretty funny actually! especially the yellow card shoved in the guy's face..! lol nice one.. other than the headless viewers as everone else mentioned, it's a perfect shot :)

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 5/22/2004
Good action shot once again, Hugo, though I see what Rob is saying regarding the spectators.
Kind regards, Chris
P.S. looks like you've got yourself a great camera!!

Groet Teunis

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/22/2004
LOL! Hi Carmen, What a very gentil way of saying I shouldn't have cut off the heads of the spectators, and you are right....;o) Things tend to happen fast, and I had to take the shot quickly... In the list of comments, there's the original triptych, though. Next one will be the same story...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Patty Morena   {K:16668} 5/22/2004

Regards...Orazio

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Thilo, Thanks for your comment. Hardly any PS was used, and other than a slight level tweak I didn't change a thing. (Not even cropping) See also the triptych within the list of comments) so I'm not quite sure which outlined player you are referring to. You're right about the shifted line, all a matter of perspective...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Kristina Kohut   {K:49990} 5/23/2004
This is great too, Hugo! So much feeling and really great timing! Chopped heads again... ;-).. But somehow it's not as distracting on this one as on the other one I just commented.

I thought for myself that this can easily be cropped just under the audience, but I also get a feeling that if you do, it might take something away from the feeling.

Raamses Ortiz   {K:4408} 5/24/2004
Hi Hugo,

Great shot! I love the expresions of the players reacting to the referie call Ffntastic. Superb colors!

Congrats,

Be seeing you...

Raamses

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 5/24/2004
Hi Hugo... Great picture evemthough the fact of the headless spectators... The colors and the definition is great!!!! Most of my attention went to the yellow card.... In my humble opion, (which is very humble...:)) I would have cropped the spectators....

Cheers,

Maria

Bobby Mun   {K:3688} 5/24/2004
Hi Hugo, the players had their expression... love the color and the composition too ! But why "headless" spectators :> Anyway, others and you have answered... Good try

Something new from you :>

Cheers ! Bobby
P.S. Did you do any color adjustment on this shot ?

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2004
Hi Bobby, Thanks for your comment. I did some minor colour tweaking, of which the major part in Nikon Capture, where I changed the default colour profile for the D100, and uploaded it to the camera prior to taking the shots. As I'm still not quite satisfied with the results, I adjusted the levels of the output in PS, but ever so slightly.

I find the D100 default settings a bit dark, so I played with the levels a bit, using Nikon Capture (again). I'm not quite satisfied with the current in camera colour management, so I'll continue to play with it...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 5/24/2004
Hugo, sorry for my weak englisch ;-)
I would like to crop the player on the right as he just show 1 % of his body. But if you do so you also have his shadow on the floor. so only heavy PS would help ;-)

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2004
Hi Thilo, Your English is far from bad...;o) Thanks for your tip, you definately have a point.

Cheers,

Hugo

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 5/25/2004
Love the look of disbelief on his face and how his eyes displaying the emotion are just over the yellow card.

ken krishnan   {K:19102} 5/26/2004
Great drama and tension on the field wonderfuly captured at the right moment.
The guy at the far end(red shots) seems intent on bashing up the refree for showing a yellow instead of a Red. Hope he didn't and the refree is safe.
Excellent image for decisive moment.

Note:
Hugo, could you please take a look at the suggestions forum - thread "what should I do". You write so many comments. I wonder what is your experience will be.
Regards,
ken.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/26/2004
