About The first few shots with my D100, taken last sunday at a field hockey match. Hockey is a fast moving game, and I enjoyed toying with the 135-400 mm lens and the camera.

The game was pretty important and turned rough as the tension mounted.

Part III: The Goal

Exact settings: 1/1250' @ f5.6, 200 ASA, -0,5 EV Zoom 135 mm. Full frame.

Your comments, as always, are appreciated!

Cheers,

superb.7

Kristina Kohut   {K:49990} 5/23/2004
Excellent, Hugo! I'm not the sport interested type, but I love the timing here! Actually on all the three! Very good action feeling, and the colours/light is really eye candy! Also composition is super, at least in foreground! The background I have some mixed feelings about maybe. I think I don't like so much that the heads are cropped... What do you think of cropping just a millimeter above the hands instead?

WALT MESK   {K:10731} 5/23/2004
excellent....great captured....i likes the colours and the definition.walt.

Rawabi Al-Nuaimi   {K:15659} 5/23/2004
back to the cropped heads..! lol.. i know that it's very hard to keep up with the action especially with a zoom lens and mind the background.. especially while using the widest setting the lens could offer..! it would be impossible to take a pic of the object and the complete people in the background..! that's why i believe this pic is perfect :)
good job.. :-D

Gino  Quattrocchi   {K:39580} 5/23/2004
Excellent Hugo ... stopped the movement with the right time of laying .... But I had one experience with the I kick ... and learned from the professionals who is important photograph from a low point the action
you must try to obtain the pass sat to approach to the game ground and start again in a little chair. . yours 135-400 is perfect for this type of photography
compliment is an excellent beginning 7

Yoshi Enoki Jr   {K:3601} 5/23/2004
Oh you've got to stop making me cry with these!

Man I wish I could play again

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47330} 5/23/2004
I like the movement of the players here, and the result of the camera is great "toying" ,way you choose sigma instead of "Nikor" lens?Saeed

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Kristina, Thanks for your comments! I appreciate them alot...) The heads were already cropped off in the oringinal shot. I should've composed it differently...:( I found it quite difficult to both capture the action and mind the composition. I'll keep it in mind the next time, though...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Gino, I know that is the proper approach. These shots where taken righ after my own match and we sat in the beautiful warm sun with a lot of beer with my team mates, cheering on our first team. So I found the highest point possible, basically just to get to know the camera. I have a few from a low position as well... (See attached)

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Yoshi, This year, I started to play again after a 13 year break... I'm really enjoying this game again...

This one's for you, my friend!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Saeed, Why I chose Sigma above Nikor? Well, that answer is quite simple, but rather long...

In general, Sigma Lenses are a bit less expensive, but also of a tad lesser quality. When we travel, I like to bring a variety of camera's, films and lenses. So I choose my lenses on how versatile they are. I have a 17-35, a 28-105 mm (standard Nikor, my only one) a fixed 105 mm macro, also very useful for portraits, and a very good one to work with, and then a 135-400 mm tele zoom. I choose that one for the long maximum focal length (not much of a teleconverter man, as I alsways feel that reduces the quality of the photo too much) and with a minimal focal lenght that (almost) meets the largest zoom of my standard lens. Nikor does not have such a lens in it's assortment. So, basically, I can cover the entire scope between 17 mm and 400 mm with only three lenses. Also just about the maximum I can travel with, bringing a D100, A F100 and a medium format camera.

Hope this makes sense,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Mauro, Thanks for your comment. I shot this series as JPEG, but also made a few in NEF. Still no real problems with the time lapse using NEF, though. I did spent some time customising the colour range and tonal balance, to improve the rather dark default setting of the D100. These shots are (almost) straight out of the camera.

Cheers,

Hugo

Orazio Minnella   {K:46437} 5/23/2004
Beautiful action shot.Great moment.Nice composition,light and colors.

Robert Gaither   {K:28432} 5/23/2004

Verena Rentrop   {K:14424} 5/23/2004
success and defeat pretty close together...

seems you are very sportive, playing on your own, I hope you were on the success rail with your own team?

Cheers,
Verena

great capture!!!

Di Ciuccio Maurizio   {K:57483} 5/23/2004
č stato come vedere una partita..bella e colorata alla perfezione...ottima sequenza..complimenti...

Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 5/23/2004
The heads are off the spectators which takes my attention away from them and back to the important action. I don't know if that was intentional, but it works for me. I'll bet you are enjoying the fast focus of the D100.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Hi Richard, Thanks for your comment. You bet I'm enjoying my D100... It's not only fast, it's also silent!

Cheers,

Hugo

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 5/23/2004
Another fine action shot, Hugo.
Once again, I'd like to have seen the heads of the spectators though.
Kind regards, Chris

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/23/2004
Once again, you are right, Chris. Not much I could've done after yesterday, the heads are not included in the original photo either... I do promise I'll keep it in mind the next time... Thanks for the advise!

Cheers,

Hugo

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 5/24/2004

Nice serie of sports photos. Great colors and details. Well captured "motion", congrats for them.
Best regards, Alex

PS: nice site as well... a bit too "redish", but good content :-)
... and thanks again for your constructive comment.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/24/2004
Hi Alex, Thanks for your comment. You are righ about my site. I'm planning a major update at the end of the summer, with a less intrusive background colour.

Cheers,

Hugo

Best Regards:
Jeff.

Christian Barrette   {K:21107} 5/25/2004
Most excellent catch, in focus, speed and "drama", with the falling goaler, the discouraged defense and the mighty scorer. I will just add my voice to the lament concerning the figures in the background. What can be done ? I would try Kristina's suggestion.

Ahmet Baki Kocaballi   {K:13627} 5/25/2004
Hi Hugo, very nice and funny series,
i wish we could see the faces of the people with their excited expressions at the background,
Regards
Baki

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 5/25/2004
I like that we get to see what looks like the same character (in the white shirt) again, this time realizing that his mistake just cost his team a goal.

jon parsons   {K:13630} 5/25/2004
marvelous action shot Hugo! your D100 is taking most beautiful pictures .. did you have to use a tripod with your sigma 135-400 (what does such a wonderful lens sell for??) ... I also took your advice and fixed the horizon in my picture 'empty chairs in the moon light" im very close to getting my first DLSR ..nikon D70..would you recommend me getting the kit lens ~18-70 nikon DX with it??( i was also going to get a sigma 70-300 APO with it) best regards ....jon

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 5/25/2004
Hi Jon, Thanks for your comment. I took these shots by hand, but normally I would use a monopod. (more agile than a tripod) The occasion was more leisure and fun (to watch the game while having a few beers) than a "real" photoshoot.

I think the Nikor 18-70 DX *sounds* as a very good lens. I choose a 17-50 Sigma with my D100, as it also fits my F100, and I'm not sure if that would apply to the Nikor DX series too, nor if that would have any use for you (do you also own a Nikon film SLR?) The combination of a 18-70 with a 70-300 coveres a nice range, and sounds good to me. I'm no real expert on lenses, though.

Earlier on in this thread, Saeed also posed a question about the lens. My answer explains why I choose the set I currently use... My Sigma 135-400 is advertised at about ?700, I believe. Luckily, that's not what I paid for it, though....;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

PS, I noticed you corrected the tilt. Didn't have time to comment on it, yet, but I will...;o)

Carmem A. Busko   {K:48763} 5/25/2004
Hi, Hugo, since I?m late because of my birthday, everything was already said ... than, no words about heads in this difficult capture..
I love the colors in all these pictures. Very good timing too.
Thank you for you wishes about my birthday.. yes , it was the happiest day in my life...Thanks again.
New camera: I gave it to myself..hehe..I always know what I desire as a birthday gift..
no mistakes.. :)

Congrats for your new camera, too!
Cheers!
Carmem

Matej Maceas   {K:24381} 5/26/2004
I don't see any problem with the cropped spectators, their presence is strong enough to give an idea about the 'environment' of the match, but the fact that we can't see their faces makes it difficult to perceive them as subjects in their own right and the viewer's attention is thus kept where it was intended to be, i.e. on the players and the game.

Paolo Barthelemy   {K:24873} 5/27/2004
Excellent action, composition, amazing colors and lighting. Three men, and three different situations of the game. Great shot, Hugo!
Cheers, Paolo

Cindi Czaja   {K:5314} 5/27/2004
Hugo - vibrancy and action very evident here. I like the composition, crop on backgrd does not take away from the intensity. Especially like your original triptych. I see that you decreased the ASA - do you feel that the saturation was increased in doing so? Have you tried the D100 in low lighting situation yet? Well done sports action. My regards, Cindi

Hello Hugo,
I played field hockey in Italy for some years (but it's not so popular).
So, first of all thanks to have posted a photo dedicated to this "minor" sport.
Also nice the imagine and the "decisive moments" added in the comments ;-)

Bye

Giuliano Guarnieri

P.S. Who won?

Ron Wilson   {K:18161} 1/25/2006
Good colourful shot. Details were captured along with the action , well done.
Field hockey is fast, yes. I think the action/sports photography allows us to appreciate the advances made to the camera in the last decade. When applied properly a 135x400mm lens can be a joy to behold.
