About Portrait of my Mom (standing, 93) and her niece (87). I know it's kinda static and old fashion like, but I sure want your opinion, because I have my doubts about this photo.

To be different

In between my thoughts

I seek thy stillness

I Love it. Great expression and tones. The DOF is good as well. The bottom part of the pic lacks some light...but it's not too bad...

It is a so hearty crop Titia and this factor is so valuable for a portrate photograph: you could create a intimate portrate. background with that books seems attractive, the light is some strange for me and like software supports!! just the niece is not relax by the camera. bravo Titia. i eould be glad if you see my photos!

Don Loseke   {K:32503} 6/14/2004
This is a great picture that you will treasure for a long time. My suggestion would be to turn the subjects a little more towards the light and not darken the bottom quite as much. It seems to have gone a dirty gray rather than the nice sepia of the upper portion of the picture. The lighting is very natural. It is very well posed and relaxed. Your mom looks as if she was many years younger. Great work. Don.

Oh, WOW thanks for all your comments and I thought it was no good. I hesitated a long time before posting it here.

Hello Don,

I agree about that colour gone sour at the bottom, maybe that's the reason I wasn't all too happy with the result. I kept looking and looking but couldn't quite put my finger on the spot. Thanks. I'll see if I can change that.
The original is in colour and I put some light in, but probably forgot the bottom part.

The lighting is a bit uneven, the top part is OK but the bottom part is quite flat. The objects on the sofa are a bit distracting to me. You said the portrait is a bit static, but that is not bothering me, it gives your mother and niece a dignified charm.

Titia Geertman   {K:5582} 6/14/2004
You're right Hermen. This photo wasn't taken with the purpose to make a beautiful portret, just to take a picture so to speak. It was only afterwards that I decided to do something with it.
Otherwise the sofa would have been empty.

Titia, this is a really great portrait, something personal and warm. If you could rework the light in there, you would get an image to keep for years.

Paul's Photos   {K:35218} 6/15/2004
I think it is a excellent photo and love the tones Yes, they are posed but they look good... the only thing that diminishes the photo or at least does not make it stand out is that the background and everything clutters the photo. Think if the background was clean..like a white wall, the focus would be totally on the subjects.

Wow.. 93 and 87.. they look great!!!

Ellen Havrilla   {K:8618} 6/15/2004
Wonderful portret, Titia, very nice sepiatones, but the light is a bit strange, and I agree with Don about the bottom.Nice to have your mum and aunt such a long time! Hope they are healthy?
Kind regards
Ellen

I love photos where the subject matter is as inportant as the photo quality. Before I read the many comments, I was thinking about what could I tell about the ladies from their expression etc. I love a photo that tells a story, Norman Rockwell effect if you understand. This photo has some of that with the books, clothing, jewelry etc. Even the hands seem to tell about the person. I love it. Del.

Titia Geertman   {K:5582} 6/26/2004
Del, thank you, that's exactly why I left all those books in the background and the stuff on the couch, because those things are very typical my aunt (sitting) and they do tell a story about her. If I had removed all that stuff and made a 'nice' background, the photo wouldn't have been as interesting to me as it is now.
I don't know who Norman Rockwell is, but I take your remark regarding him as a compliment.

Titia
