About Interesting reflection of the Alii Bldg in downtown Honolulu, HI, mid-morning. The Alii bldg reflection appears almost "brick red" in color.

The imperfect alignment of the reflecting surfaces provides a "carnival like" distortion of the beautiful Alii Bldg.

Enhanced blues and "brick red" colors are due to the bronze smoked glass reflecting surface which, in effect became a warm neutral density filter, like a pair of sun glasses.

The original "film" photo was converted to digital (by COSTCO for $ 0.29). Post processing includes perspective adjustments to remove the "looking up" distortion.

nice reflection! i was wondering if it's possible to stand in front of the trees to capture the reflection on the glass. i think the trees are a little bit distracting. just a suggestion though..

Great shot Luther! I love images like this with buildings reflected in buildings. If it were me, I would maybe crop that little yellow bit off the bottom as I find it a wee bit distracting. But nonetheless a great picture, and the contortions of the reflected building just adds that extra something to the image.

Justine :)

Justine:

Thanks for viewing and commenting. You are correct, the bit of yellow should not be there..

This was an interesting photo opportunity. The lighting was great along with the clouds and blue sky in the reflection(s).

Aloha ... Luther

Thanks for viewing and commenting. With regard to getting in front of the trees , - It would be difficult and would result in a semi-worm's eve view. I'll give it a try the next time I am downtown with a wide angle lense.

Aloha .... Luther

excellent image.. agree about the trees and that it would be hard to avoid.. maybe you could get closer and tilt the camera up more... but not sure if you can still get the reflected building in the image.. great work

Paul:

Thanks for viewing and suggestions. I agree with your observation/doubt on keeping the reflected building in the photo with a closer shot. (basic physics of light prevails).

Aloha ... Luther

This is our first meeting on the pages of Usefilm, Mr. Chong. Although I concure with Mr. Yusuf's comment about the trees, I think that all things considered this is a splendid use of reflections in photography. Moving to a different position might have contorted the reflection or even made it impossible to see. Allow my to invite yiou to take a look at my "Reflected house", uploaded about 10 days ago. I did not have to contend with trees while taking that photo and yet your result is more dramatic.
Your words about being the objective for all photographers in relation to my "Teenager guest 1" are a compliment I could not ask a better one for. Thank you for it.
Regards,
Dr. Rafael (Rafi) Springmann

Rafi:

Thank you for viewing and commenting.

I feel that I was fortunate to get the shot since the mid-morning illumination and the neutral density and warming effect of the reflecting surface actually darkened the Alii building and skyline reflection. In addition, my exposure was intentionally set under, by 1 stop, based an old Sekonic 28c incident light meter reading at ground level. I'll probably return in the near future and try the same shot with a Canon 300D, with and w/o trees if possible.

Aloha from Honolulu ......... Luther

PS: I have viewed your reflected house posting and will comment iwithin an hour.

Dear Luther,

a great reflection composing with lots of detail. minor things: the saturation/contrast is a bit high. and I would add a light frame (especially for the water on the lower right).
nice one!
take care,
Thilo

Luther Chong   {K:3585} 8/31/2004
Thilo thanks for viewing and commenting. I agree with your comment on saturtion and will look into the frame for future photos that need the help...

Aloha ...... Luther
