Wow this is a scary view. Beautifully taken and very brave of you to get that close, in Guatemala we also have a lot of these landslides(not at this height) and you just never know when they will happen. Congratulations on Featured Donor, I had nominated this picture and I'm glad they used it. Alison

alison, apparently the chinese government has plans to put a dam right through the middle of this place. it's still a long way off of being done, but if true, i'm glad i saw this beautiful mountainous area of china when i did. it may never be the same once dam workers get in there and start doing whatever it is they're going to do.

What a shame, it seems as if progress never benefits the environment. Alison

"Progress" is very subjective. of course, as you probably know Alison, china is developing rapidly. and since china has little in the way of lobby groups at this point in time (they're in the very embryonic stages), there are few people who can stand up and say "this isn't right." Lobby groups will take a long time to develop into an effective force here. The government is still in firm control of things like this.

This is a great scene and I like the view of the exposed limestone cliffs with the cracks; rather a fragile spot for a road but where else could it go?
There is a lot of haze in the shot, is that typical or seasonal?

hi ian.... the two weeks i spent in yunnan were rather cloudy and rainy. early to mid-july can be like that. its probably cloud we're looking at there and both typical and seasonal.
best wishes ~ james
