About Man and beast, both taking time out to enjoy Central Park.

Taken in September 1974, during that period as a young man when I fancied myself a street photographer, in the company of Gary WInograd, Alfred Eisenstadt, and of course, Henri.

Hi Steve - great story in this fantastic composition, excellent light and contrast!!, what I think could improve the picture, is a little more of the ground at his feet, but anyway it's a great capture!!!

>>Taken1974...amazing sharp...<<

When I became a "born-again" photographer 3 years ago, I turned into a fan of Leica-derived cameras from the Former Soviet Union. Joining this elite group of "Commie Camera Comrades", we would always make fun of those horribly expensive "L-word" cameras from Wetzlar.

But the proof is in the pudding. I just looked at an 8-inch by 7-inch print I made of this image from 1974 --- with a magnifier, I can actually read the very small type along the top of one of the pages... "The New York Times Saturday September...." Of course, I already knew that information, but I still find it amazing that you can actually see it. Also, the one little news headline that's visible says, "Kidnapping Case Ended by Woman's Sentencing"

So, I must admit, there is no arguing with the sharpness and contrast of that old Leitz Summicron. If only I had kept it!!

Best regards,
SteveR

An excellent example of the HCB spirit . . . the juxtaposition of horse and man, the subject's apparent misdirected attention. Good ol' IIIc!

Joannès Ceyrat   {K:877} 9/28/2004
