About	Another single shot. Taken in 2000, reworked in 2004. The actual exposure settings are, as far as I can remember: Aperture f/22 Shutterspeed approximately 6 minutes Obviously, a tripod was used. The sight of the Aurora Borealis is breathtakingly stunning. I almost forgot I had the camera set on Bulb, but remembered just in time....:) Your indepth critique is very much appreciated! Old and dear Pentax? ?she? worked in a so beautiful way! I have never seen an Aurora Boralis with my eyes, but I?m sure that I would have seen what there is in this photo, it?s so real and magic too, I love the light effects of course, but also the colour of the sky, unusual and wonderful, are you sure about the exposure? I can?t see star trails, maybe your memory lacks (I?m always memory down ;) ), anyway it?s not so important, I like this splendid shot!!

Thanks for your great comment on my photo, the background issue is very nice. Antonella would have preferred a closer aperture and a neat background, you suggest a larger one and a blurred background? maybe mine is better ;))) Just kidding, I like to see the different interpretations on the same subject and each of them is right. I used Auto program because the man was riding quicky and I didn?t want to waste time adjusting the camera settings, so f/4 is not decided by me ;) If I had more time, I would have used a larger aperture, just to blur a little more the columns.

Amazing that the church is not completely overexposed. It's a bit yellow, so the sky may not have been that green?

Just in time indeed. It would be a good shot without the church but the combination is just wonderful. It may be a single shot, but the previous shot in your portfolio also had a strong inner glow and one very dominant color...

the combination of church and aurora is pretty strong, I'm far away from being religious ;)
but seeing such a strong nature event could bring you in such a direction.

If I imagine the shot w/o church, nice, but not outstanding.

Hugo, I never saw aurora in real .. but i remember there is constant movement in those "curtains", is that right ? So your 5 min. exposure means the movement is rather slow ?
If these are the real colours, well then only thing i can say: one of the most beautiful shots i've seen lately .. bravo !

Dear Hugo,

no sign of life since days and weeks, and then this comeback ;-)

the image really looks surrealistic, but that happens with most extreme long exposures like this one. the colors reach a stage where they even hurt the eyes =)
the composing itself is well done and balanced. the church on the lower left, the aurora dominating the upper areas and even the mountain that ascend to the right fit in perfect. two minor things. first, I find the church being a bit to much lighted. not sure if that's on the original picture but the sky is unreal enough. second there is some grain left that you might delete easily with the blur tool in PS.
anyway, great comeback and well done night shot.

So few people have ever seen the Aurora Borealis, myself being one of the many. Although I have seen many photos of them at the art museum.

Indeed spectacular skies they produce. And this is indeed very impreseive as well.

I very much like the church included in the image,it adds so much!

I originally come from the north of my country and when i was akid we often lay on the ground looking at this, and after a while it seems like it's falling into you.. This picture gives a feeling on how it is, and it makes me miss this - we don't have much of it here south.. Great!

Incredibly strong. The composition is perfect and the image so dense in features to stare at. The stars in the sky add interest to the aurora, the details on the mountain slopes and, of course, the church too.
I don't know how is the original beside this, but I would try to step down a bit to reveal any additional features in the highlights.
Is it me ? I think the horizon slants by a degree or two to the left.
