| About |
The Arcade runs under Bethesda Terrace at 72nd Street, linking the tree-lined Mall (also called Poets' Walk) with the Bethesda Fountain and Boat Lake area.
Until recently, the Arcade was a decaying, dark, litter-and-grafitti-strewn tunnel. Under former Mayor Giuliani, and continuing under Mayor Bloomberg, it is being restored to its former glory.
This photo was taken in October 2002. The preservation was well under way at this time, and it is almost complete by now.
When I lived in NYC in the late '70's, this area had become very seedy, the province of druggies and other shady characters.
Now, this area is safe and beautiful, and it's used and enjoyed by thousands of families every weekend.
