Powerful peaceful composition, great chromatic effect!
That's really Paradise, isn't it! :-)
Congrats

A very nice landscape with a good use of the "river" (is it a river?...) that catch our eyes and guides them through the whole photo

Very nice the effect of the mist: a nice mood

Bye MaxI

great shot, John. I love how the sharp angle in the river bend compliments & repeats that of the mountain peak. Beautiful colour & tones - feels just like early morning. Wow, paradise looks so stunning!
I do find my eye wandering out the sides of the photo & so would like to see some kind of frame to hold me in there, especially since the top & bottom ones are so strong - just a thought. Really lovely.

Thank you all for your comments. To clarify, the meander is not a river, this area is an inlet from the sea taken at low tide.
I have been looking at slides on a lightbox and this is the effect of a masking frame on a 35mm slide.
I wanted the mask to confine the view above and below but to give the feeling of an endless view left and right. A virtual panorama that allows the viewer to complete the picture with their imagination. Regards all and thanks for looking. John

Todd Miller   {K:16464} 9/12/2004
john, this is a truly wonderful image. the background reminds me of a Maxfield Parrish painting. your choice of frame is great too, and works well to achieve the effect you describe.
my only critique lies in the composition, but may not have been possible. could you have included more of the meander on the left, to show the entire 'S' shape??

at any rate this is a beautiful shot. you captured some amazing light here. Bravo!!
todd

Uffi Yu   {K:209} 9/19/2004
This is another great work! You have eyes on beauties, not just depend on great lens or camera. Yeah, 70-200mm f2.8 VR is a good lens. You should have one.

Menno Naber   {K:3567} 9/24/2004
Excellent!
great line to the mountain

john, this is extremely interesting. the contrast between what appears to be a dry or drying lakebed in the foreground against the lush hills in the background is very unusual. combined with the rising mist and the curving, meandering stream of water it creates a very surreal landscape. it wasn't until i read your "about:" that i realized what i was seeing. a tidal basin! the realization changed my perception of the image instantly.

great light. perfect exposure. excellent composition. also dig the "letterbox" presentation as it adds to the mystery of the image. 7+favorite.

take care,
tom

OMG ... this one is a killer!!! 110 % beauty! Congrats on the award ...

Ian McIntosh   {K:42170} 11/4/2004
Ahah, The romance here is fabulous. My own intentions are to photoshop it into a steeper peak and try to present it as those early artists did of Auckland if you have seen those. However by loving the place enough to find the right moment you produce this. No obvious photoshop distortions. Nice.
By the way John, do you know of any shops in this city that would be able to develope some colour film pushed from 400 to 1600? Foolish endeavour I hear but worth the experiment as it was my only option to capture a friends party recently.

John Lamb   {K:9687} 11/4/2004
Ian, have you tried the Hospital. They process C41, I think, and E6. The only other place would be Photokina in George Street. Thanks for the comments. Cheers John
