About Subject Background: Third shot from the fair (scanned with Nikon Coolscan LS4000). Is Norman living in this house? Drinking tea with Hitchcock? Who is brave enough to find out?

Photoshop concept: Go for BW, increased middle tones. Tried to bring harmony in the geometry but didn't succeed =)

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

Stephen Bowden   {K:64519} 9/25/2004
Excellent composition, there is no way on earth I would get my kids into that house lol

I love the B&W it gives it a fabulous eerie edge to it. The tree is outstanding, I wonder if it moves in real life ?

Great capture and superbly done Thilo.

Best wishes,
Steve

Kevin Collier   {K:19076} 9/25/2004
...excellent -- I love it!! the psot shooting work is great on this one -- fit like a glove - K

Jan Symank   {K:15755} 9/25/2004
Huh ! What a nice " Rebecca House "
The light and the shadows enhance the spooky mood
beautifully ! Also the dramatic sky and wide angle perspective.
Very well done,
Regards
Jan

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 9/25/2004
the foreground is a bit dark thus the details in the statue were lost.

PS for the lens it can not be used for Nikon F65 for example, it is designed for DSRL such as the D70

Milana Diklic   {K:561} 9/25/2004
it's such a weird scene! I like the shadows very much, as well as the sky. It's funny, though, how those two are walking by as if everything is so usual ;)
that fact makes it even more interesting!

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 9/25/2004
Hi Thilo, kenn ich...:)sieht ja gespenstisch aus, super gemacht, passt auch super. Mein Foto geht in die andere Richtung...mit dem Mann, der da an der Fassade klettert..Wie klein doch die Welt ist...:=)
LG,Ursula

Rocks hard. Bloody awesome feeling. Good one!!!
C.(ool stuff) !!!

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Dear Antonio,

the relatively low detail in the statue comes from the original image, not the rework ;-)

as for the lens: I own both a D70 and a F65, but good to know that you have a DSLR-specialized lens. Thanks for the info.

take care and thank you for the precious feedback,
Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Hi Verena,

skip the trip, das reimt sich sogar ;-)

LG,
Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Hi Steve,

the tree is moving just a tad ;-)
I have some night shots as well, very spooky lighting. will probably post them after my vacation break.
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Hi Kev,

sorry, my friend, but I don't get the clue with "psot shooting". any special code? =)

do you mean the PS work?

take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Dear Jan,

ah, a Hitchcock fan ;-)

thanks for the kind and constructive words. wide angle is sometimes useful =)
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Dear Milana,

the pedestrians just walking by and having a good time is a detail I also love ;-)

thanks for the inspiration,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/25/2004
Hi ursula,

ich war ja schon froh, dass es tagsüber so leer und dass der himmel voller wolken war. ich hatte das dramatische SW schon im hinterkopf =)

LG,
Thilo

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59973} 9/25/2004
I was just wondering if this could be digital! And it?s not. Very "scary of that scarity" :)
I would like to join...
A great B&W technique.

:)

eerie....strong.....serious photography here.....zertie

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 9/26/2004
Hi Thilo, Some grain, but nothing to be nitpicking about here. We've discussed difference in style, and I came to the conclusion, there's no arguing appeal.... (hey! As if we didn't know that yet...:) I always appreciate your efforts in pushing the envelope, and admire you for that. That includes your always helpful and profound comments...

I love the lighting in this shot, and think the psycho atmosphere is almost tangible. Emphasising that atmosphere, I think the only thing I would've considered a lower camera position, to make the "haunted house" tower out into the sky a bit more.

Other than that, a very strong image, and a 5.1 rating is way to low.... Let's see if I can justify that....

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 9/26/2004
5.5 now... Closer...

NN     {K:26787} 9/26/2004
Hugo ... may I join the rating race ... adding a 7 ... ;-)

NN     {K:26787} 9/26/2004
5.6 only! :(

Lukasz Kuczkowski   {K:14684} 9/26/2004
Thilo, this building looks very strange and I would never visit it :-)
well captured; I can feel the atmosphere of this place;
well done
great b&w
regards
Lukasz

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/26/2004
Dear lukasz,

that's the greatest compliment for me if you feel the strangeness of this place.

I wouldn't join either =)
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/26/2004
Dear Jeanette,

digitally, this picture wouldn't be such impresse in terms of wide angle ;-)
I have to buy a special DSLR wide angle lens to get the same effect.
thanks for the feedback!
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/26/2004
Dear Hugo,

thanks again for the elaborate comment. as for the grain: I decided not to use Neat Image this time as I hoped it would support the scary mood =)

I have to admit that this was the first time I ever used a REAL wide angle (aka a analogue camera without focal length enlargement). Si I have to learn a lot in this field, especially possible wide angle distortion. I should have started with my D70 as the learning curve is far better than with real film ;-) but: good wide angles (12-24) for DSLR are really expensive, even from Sigma.

So yes, you're right about the angle (and the position, if I may add this).

about the rating: I don't care anymore as the rating is far beyond EVERYTHING I was taught in statistics. I like to see some 6.0+ ratings, for sure. But if the rating is well below that (and I personally have a different feeling), that's just strange. nothing else.
but anyway, thanks for trying to create a different rating picture =)

take care and thanks for the precious words,
Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 9/26/2004
Dear Elisa,

thanks for browsing by and trying to get the numbers high ;-)
unfortunately, the rating is not an arithmetical mean so it cannot by "cheated" ;-) Don't ask me what the UF brains do here but it doesn't make sense to me. 5.3 by 2 ratings, that's just impossible...
take care,
thilo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 9/26/2004
Hi Thilo,

Thanks for your reply, On the wide angle, I got one with my D100, and I?m really happy with it. I rarely use it with the DSLR, but mostly with the F100, which creates some awesome results. The distortion is rather big, though, and minimising it (obscuring it is better phrased) requires the camera to be perfectly level. If choosing a lower camera position, it needs to be exagerated, otherwise it will become a "flaw", if you see what I mean.

With the DSLR, the distortion (a good thing in this shot) would is slightly reduced by the magnifying factor of the CCD, which is the reason I tend to use it with film only.

Didn't say the grain was a bad thing...) I do agree it fits with the eerie atmosphere. As you know, I like some grain / noise myself too....

Cheers,

Hugo

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 9/26/2004
Yes, for to drink tea with Hitchcock!!!
It's very impressive and the view poit and perspective help look it.
Well done.
greetings.
