About	This is an image of the harbour at The Cobb, Lyme Regis, Dorset in England, taken about 45 minutes before sunset. The harbour was bustling with fishing boats unloading their catch just to the left of this image and locals looking to buy the best and freshest fish. I was really taken with the beauty and colour of these rusted fittings on the ancient harbour wall and with the light on the water and distant harbour buildings. The very wide angle lens (about 16mm) has caused some curvature that makes the buildings look a bit skew but it was the only way to capture this image. I used a 2 stop hard ND grad to tone down the bright sky.

Barry - Last comment for today. I've noticed a real strength in your photography by blending foreground details and expressive backgrounds. I think that many excellent photographers work this way.

I've noticed another landscape adage at work here: shooting at sunset and sunrise to get the nice warms and pop contrast from raking sunlight.

Excellent work on the whole.

Do you find the graduated filter as a worthwhile investment?

Michael, thanks for your thoughtful comments. Yes, I couldn't live without my ND grads. All of the three images posted today would have been impossible or unattractive without their use. I tried taking this image without the ND grad and the sky was more or less pure white which didn't sit well with the warm tones expressed elsewhere in the image. The two shots of the Cobb would have resulted in bright skies and mostly black foregrounds on the harbour wall and distant headland. I'd recommend buying a set - Cokin retail a P series holder and three ND grads at a reasonable price if you want to give them a go, or if you've got the cash, you can't beat a set of Lee Filters.
