About Subject Background: View from the Rialto bridge. The title give you the idea of this capture...

Photoshop concept: Slight tilt. Worked on the underexposed foreground, worked on the middle tone contrast. Tried to get a postcard from Venice from 1920s (or so) - with faded/desaturated colors.

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

Beautiful results from your work on this. I was looking at it closely wondering what was done before seeing your comment on it. I love the toning you have achieved along with the clarity. 7+++

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 10/6/2004
I think that your postcard treatment works well. Can't do too much about the light on the foreground but you integrated it well into the chosen concept.

Bradley Prue   {K:30312} 10/6/2004
Thilo, I am not quite getting that "Postcard" feeling. I think that if the water were not reflecting the bright sky so much....and the water was much darker, it would have that feeling. Darker water..more vintage image.
...Best regards! Brad

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 10/6/2004
nice faded colors!
excellent DOF the image is super and the PS work enhanced it, but it doesn't look like a postcard?!
Maybe because I never saw one from the 20s ;)
7/7

Bart Aldrich   {K:7614} 10/6/2004
Beautiful nostalgic mood, Thilo. love the subdued toning.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 10/6/2004
Hi Thilo, Post card? No. 20s Look? Definately. Slight tilt? Now you mention it, yeah. But why? Interesting shot? Absolutely.

The subdued tones create a somewhat painted atmosphere and do make this image quite timeless. I do think this works better than any sepia toning in this particular photo with this particular scene. Interesting concept. Don't quite get the idea behind the tilt, though. Is it to give it a snapshot quality as well? If so, I think the photo is too well composed for that, and the tilt is too little...

Always enjoy looking at what has sprouted from your mind, pushing the envelope of photography inch by inch. Good job!

Cheers,

Hugo

Fadel J   {K:13542} 10/7/2004
What a view! fantastic composition and color tones, it is definitely a postcard. I guess the guys on the right side will make bit hard to beleive it's 1920 :) Wonderfull one my friend!

Roberto Arcari Farinetti   {K:177120} 10/7/2004

WOW!!!! the subdued palette and lighting knock me out,Thilo!..this is how i have always imagined Venice...the background buildings have a vintage postcard look, but the foreground up to the older look has a more modern appearance..does have a fine painting look,too...be proud of this one,Thilo!..perspective and max DOF are superb..Bravo,baby!...regards,gayle (7+)

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 10/7/2004

Dear Stefan,

thanks for the remarks. not sure if I get the point with the light in the foreground. anything wrong with that?
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Dear Brad,

thanks for the honest feedback. will think about the water "issue", interesting point that I didn't see here before.
thanks,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Hi Hugo,

thanks for the creative feedback ;-)

The tilt story get you in trouble, I see. Easy story: The original image has a tilt to the right... no idea why. probably because I loved the scene too much =) So I tilted the image just to bring it into the right shape. If you look at the poles in the middle, you will see what I mean.

thanks for the kind words, I always try to do something different ;-)

take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Dear Fadel,

great that you belongt to the "pro" postcard group ;-)

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Hi Ursula,

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Dear Cenk,

thanks for the kind words ;-)
take care,
thilo

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 10/7/2004
The lower right hand part of the photo lies in shadow and to me it is hard to really make it exciting - it is just sort of flat not matter what you do there. The upper left has a lot of beautiful light going however and I think that your treatment integrates the two parts.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/7/2004
Hi Stefan,

okay, I see your point here ;-)
I had to put some light onto the foreground as it was too dark there (no tripod ;-)

thanks for the valuable input,
thilo

Walter Scarella   {K:17237} 10/7/2004
Beautiful elaboration Thilo, I like the soft tones and light.
Excellent work.

Hey Thilo,

Nice capture and post-work. The sky is masterfully done. I think you achieved your goal of antique postcard.

Erik

Uwe Bachmann   {K:10222} 10/8/2004

vg, uwe

Stephen Bowden   {K:64516} 10/8/2004
Thilo this is excellent. The more I look at it, the more I want to look into it !!

Amazing work and a magnificent composition. You have done a fabulous job of slightly desaturating the colours.

Very impressed indeed :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 10/8/2004

Erik Neldner   {K:10896} 10/8/2004
Thilo,
Likewise. I'll be putting some stuff up from my recent trip to Israel. I posted one yesterday. Good to see that you're still working hard.
cheers,
Erik

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/8/2004
Dear Erik,

stay tuned for your work ;-)
great to have you back.

take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/8/2004
Hi Ursula,

LG,
Thilo

Pedro Libório   {K:53855} 10/9/2004
I think that you have acgieved your purpose with the treatement that you have used here, it really looks an old postcard of Venice, but a wonderful view it is. Well I would go for a stonger contrasted and vivid colors ...I would like to see it to...let me try to see my version...:-) ...I will post it to you in some moments
regards...

Pedro Libório   {K:53855} 10/9/2004
...well here it is...
with compliments my friend and thanks for your precious comments.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/9/2004
Dear Pedro,

I always love to see that other peope are working with my pictures. That's probably the greatest honor (and more worth than just thousands of hits or awards).

I like your version a lot and I do recognize the Pedro style here ;-)
great work. You keep the strong sky and the interesting houses in the back but go for more saturation and contrast. very good my friend.

thanks for your creative input. always appreciate your support my friend.
take care,
thilo

P. Christine Skinner   {K:27338} 10/10/2004
Excellent work Thilo. What you set out to achieve you did in spades. You have maintained clarity and detail yet given it that overall soft blended feel of a 1920's postcard.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/10/2004
Dear Christine,

thanks for the kind & constructive feedback.
really appreciate your support.
take care,
thilo
