About So many people seem to like the geothermal spring postings that I decided to go back and give some more the "once over" kanemoto treatment.

This is a geothermal hot spring in Yellowstone National Park. Like many of my photographs, I have masked off different elements of the photograph and corrected for light/dark and contrast. I also give my digital images a little saturation "oomph" to make them seem more film-like.

hi Michael,
i like the way you colortreat your landscapes very much! but i suggest you start experimenting with other types of images as well, like the one you have in your usefilm profile! ;-)
regards,
kostas

Very nice photo Michael! Colour palette really beautiful, congrats.

Kostas:

Oh yeah, I was wondering how long it would take you to notice that my profile image is a blatant rip off of your much better work.

All I need is a fisheye lens and you might see some American versions of the car photography. Since I can't afford to lose my camera off of the car I'm thinking a nice 4" by 6" board with bungee cords or nylon straps might be just the platform I need...

Michael,
Wether your 'oomph' or not - This seems to be a maginficent location. What a landscape. You have done proud to the setting you had in hand.

regards,
ken.

Beautiful Velvia like saturation from your boosting it. I love how the water is so clear that we can see right down into the bowls of the chasm.
Nice shot!

Brilliant is all I can say!!

Hi Michael, I have to admit, this is much more to my liking....;o) Excellent colour depth, and the deep blue of the geothermal spring, reaching down into the depth is beautiful, as well as the minerals around it. Just out of curiosity; I have a feeling you did some tweaking on the mountains in the background and in the sky. I wonder what...;)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo:

Here are the areas I "tweaked"

Adjusted levels (brightness and contrast) on seperately masked elements:
- Sky
- Distant hills with trees
- Distant geyser group (white) with stand of trees to the left, and the grass in front of them
- geyser group on the right in the midground, just behind the spring.
- The back half of the runoff behind the spring
- The front half (immediate foreground) in front of the spring
- The blue water of the pool

Quite a bit of elements, but I've been getting better control and results.

Overall, a +13 on saturation.

Excellent

Michael, I'm studying your Yellowstone pictures, and what I noticed is that yours are all different views than mine. I love this one especially for the sharp colors of the pool, with the stunning white edge, and super-clear depth. This is very surreal! Excellent work! Ina

Ina:

I have many more not posted, so if I see the same subject I may start posting Yellowstone again...

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/3/2006
Michael, I have to be very careful what I post, I can't take any artistic licence with you being the expert in Yellowstone! My next post is for you :) Ina

Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 2/3/2006
Michael my comment was sent as reply to myself - duh! So I'm reposting. The saturation levels you've used are exquisite, the color depth in and around the pool are a fine example of what I should be aiming for. I have to be careful not to overdo it, as I'm aware there are experts around :) Ina

Great Yellowstone portfolio! This one is my favourite among them. Great colours, with background view shown as well..
