I like the effect you get.. =) Great composition also.. almost like an earthquake.. not for them but for us... perhaps their music is dangerous? hehe.. =)

Cheers

Beautiful, nice composition

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 10/25/2004
Hi Hugo,

I have been observing your tryptich for a while now and I like that you used the same aperture value and shutter speed. cause the background maintained stability... I like the change in the sense of movement... Bout I thing the flash compensation changed the color IMO to a non suitable yellowish... which bothers me...

Nevertheless... The concept is great and very original... IMO...

Cheers,

Maria

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 10/25/2004
I like the graduated blurring between the images here, but I do agree with Maria Luisa that the orange cast is a little much. Moving the sequence along in colorspace is a good idea, but maybe not this direction :-) All IMHO of course. I think all three shots are fun. The helmet ma nin the background adds comedy for me - he and his headgear looks so out of place somehow, and then he too disintegrates in the end!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 10/25/2004
Hi Maria, Thanks for your comment, as always much appreciated. I'm glad you approve of it, except for the yellow tone. The yellow tone is created by a yellow spotlight, and has nothing to do with the reduced flash intensity. I found it quite difficult to turn off the stage lights without anybody noticing, though....;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

scattered reality ;-)

like the way you played around with the sharpness here, adds a lot of dynamics here. fits IMHO well with the expressions on the singer's face. I can hear the loudness in the final picture =)

take care,
Thilo

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 10/25/2004
The best thing about these images is the background!!!
I really like how u managed to keep the same background in all of the three pics, the sense of motion and minutes passing by is excellent too :)
The yellow hue is not so flattering but since its not a studio guess u didn?t have much choice about the lighting?!
Good image love the upright arrangement :)

NN     {K:26787} 10/25/2004
Hi Hugo! You know what ... this really made me laugh! The increasing blur suits this case very well - the pic at the bottom might be a bit too much if it was sharp ;-) Funny work! I do like it

Kurt LaRue   {K:5067} 10/25/2004
What a buildup, Hugo! The loss of focus and brightness match the singer as he increasingly loses himself in the song. A very poetic and symbolic series you have going here. Looking forward to the next one. Kurt

Nuno Murias   {K:5311} 10/25/2004
Is very dificult to make a constructive coment...bsides i like it...special the guy in the background...looks like a member of the late 70's and 80" Devo. Anther think i like is the build up of the performance great idea...like allways...Congrats!

Sally A.   {K:4556} 10/25/2004
i like the different expression in each slide.
Great bright colors, the last one is the best w/ the ghosty feeling.
Good Job.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 10/25/2004
Hi Stefan, I had little choice in selecting the orange tone; A yellow spot light was aimed directly at the lead singer. Didn't want to play too much with PS. I think it does create an "unease" in this shot, and that fits very well in line of this triptych (the three individual images) I think. Building up the tension, so to speak....;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hallo Hugo
Groet teunis

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47515} 10/25/2004
Hi,Hugo
I thought, I?ll wait tell the 3rd image, as you said so the idea will be cleared, but this image(images) actually has more clear idea than the first one ( to me),what I like is the fixed figures with a flash elements effect changed, which is the results obvious changed, so the comparison is there, regarding the fore and the background.
I?d like to mention one thing regarding colour light temperature, which many can benefit from it, the light source, does create a wrong skin tone, but in the Nikon D100,it is a piece of cake, a pre set between 3000k and 400k (White Balance)( in your case) would?ve adjusted the colour balance of the image.
One more thing (You have to be patient with me dear Hugo), in your answer on the previous image said: Does there always need to be a point?
my answer is: YES otherwise what?s the point to do it!...Having said that I will emphasize that those type of images is for building up knowledge and all gain benefit from them as all the displayed images do,, well done, regards, Saeed

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47515} 10/25/2004
Small correction,
the correct figures is:...a pre set between 3000k and 4000k...Saeed

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 10/25/2004
Hugo, I really admire your ability to think out new ideas and then carry them out with such consistently good quality.

This is an excellent triptych that illustrates your concept brilliantly.

Well done!!

Best regards, Chris

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 10/26/2004
This really gets across the build up of intensity of the singer belting out the song. The movement shown with the shutter speed seems like a result of his voice reverberating the surroundings. The yellow tone does add to the effect, as if it were devoid of any yellow cast, it would lose intensity and appear as more of a snapshot. Waiting for #3

Randy

Bobby Mun   {K:3688} 10/26/2004
Hi Hugo,

Great shot ! That's a very interesting series. I like the way you did the graduate blurring between the images. I think maybe better if all 3 images are having the same tone.

Cheers ! Bobby

I don?t know if you read elsewhere, I?m having troubles with my hand... so, I have to be brief(?):
thank you for illustrating photographic techniques so well. This is a good purpose of use of this site.
Cheers,
C.

Lori Stitt   {K:74434} 10/26/2004
Hi Hugo!!

Well, you've once again come up with something totally different! Very interesting.
And a most interesting progression.

I can just hear the sound as his face 'reddens from the strain/screaming'! LOL

For me, I think this is what really 'makes' this one! (that guy in the background doesn't look thrilled does he? :)

Good job,
Lori ;)

Neil Dolman   {K:26883} 10/26/2004
Hi Hugo, nice effect and interesting explanation. I'm thinking - i'm sure i should know what would happen by varying the exp. comp. but then never having seen the effect like this before...it's really helpful. Thanks for sharing, and not to forget thanks for all you recent comments. Best wishes Neil

Orazio Minnella   {K:46638} 10/26/2004
Hi Hugo, superb trilogy shot.Nice scene and great composition.

maybe i'm boring but i like the top one the best. Good DOF and clearity, and most of all colors. Great shot in my opinion.

NIce work, Interesting Study!!!
Congrats Hugo, Fantastist colors you produced!

Cheers Radák

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 10/26/2004
Hi Saeed, thanks for your comment. You pose a few interesting things. I know I need to look into the white balance and the colour tone. I'm not yet up to speed with that.

The yellow tone in this case was created by a very strong yellow / orange spot light, aimed directly at this area. I'm sure I could've corrected this, or even achieved a better result with a different / customised white balance, but I'm not yet up to speed with this. I have a few shots, where a different colour of light was aimed at that spot, resulting in a completely different atmosphere as well as skin tone.

In my mind I remember the tone to be exactly like the middle photo, and I agree the tone looks od. The cool temperature of the full flash in the top one already corrects this, but there's also a whiff of blue light from another spot light, which turned off in the second and third. (if I remember correctly....;o)

If you know of a link with more info concerning the white balance, I'd be very happy if you would send it to me!

As to the second point (yeah, I know, I'm talking way too much, so please be patient with me too!) I have expressed myself rather strict. I do agree that there always needs to be a point. From the stand alone image in the first, that point cannot have become completely clear, although my about text on "the build up" is somewhat of a give away.

I'll explain myself fully in the third photo. The idea behind this triptych is not apparent in each single upload, but something I'm trying to get across in the combination of the trhee uploads. The photographic themes vary too, but are not primarily used for building up knowledge. In all three of the individual compositions, I shot the different images with a pre-fixed idea. (so this was not based on trial and error.... Made a mistake in the first one, though)

What I'm trying to do here, is to create a unity within three different photos by means of (relative simple) photographic tricks; not only within one upload, but within the entire series. I hope I have expressed myself clearly, and that you get the drift.

Thanks, again, my friend! Hope I wasn't too rough with my first reply... I appreciate your comments alot!

Cheers,

Hugo

i do not really understand what you did (same fi and time) but different images... think we have a singer here do we? and yes, i feel like we are loosing him... or he is loosing us.
Good develope of the moment or can i say good fade away.
A.

he seems to like what he does, nevertheless he is losing it, I agree!Nice timeline!!!

Verena Rentrop   {K:14417} 10/31/2004
Dear Hugo,

to continue my comment, as I'm only sitting in a quite normal car, already approx.10 years old Twingo, there is no way for me to get lost in acceleration so often...

but a preferred way is very loud music, want to feel it deep in my stomach, can forget everything around me for a while...

helps you to survive the daily madness...

the performer in this triptych has the luck to have a voice which is worth standing on stage, so he can get totally lost in his own music...

a hug
Verena

Carlheinz Bayer   {K:14220} 11/5/2004
That is an interesting study of how flash comp variations effect an image. That is exactly the right way to get a feeling for that. Very good!
C.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 11/6/2004
Thanks C! It was just that. And it fits within the thing I had in mind, expressed in shots I and III:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Joann Winborn   {K:12087} 11/8/2004
Very interesting progression. You have created sound through images. Well done!

Emgy Massidda   {K:60169} 11/10/2004
The singer winding himself up at the sound of the music and of his voice, feeling the tension growing until he loses control of his movements....... The dynamism in the bottom image is almost explosive........
Superb work, Hugo!

James Hager   {K:6285} 12/7/2004
Very interesting idea to do the "Losing it ..." series. This image works the best for me because main difference I see is in the motion of the two people. In the one with the bug, the different backgrounds distracted me a bit from the main subject. The one with "split personalities" was just too different for my taste, but I enjoyed trying to figure out what you were doing.

Mark Evans   {K:16635} 1/6/2005
great shot . i also sing in a band and have had many shots took like this !! great capture .. well done ... regards mark .

Hello Hugo,

Rather a funny one. I like the sequence going from clarity to confusion.

Note: My broadband is down and strugling with the slow line. Sorry that I am not as active as I would like to be. As a result I have not visited your portifolio for a long time.

Hope my connection will be corrected soon.

wish you a happy new year.

regards,
ken.
