About Subject background: Chinatown, San Francisco.
A street sign.
A street sign that has obviously seen better times.
A street sign that could tell a lot of stories from the past, good & bad ones.
A street sign that will probably even be there when we're not anymore.
Wisdom of age, burden of the past...
A street sign.

PS concept: Desaturated the colors, slight crop, tried to get an aged look.

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

Good PS work here - you really did a fine job of bringing out the detail -- I love old signs -- brings back memories I never had...See ya .. K

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 10/30/2004
Interesting about!! This image would look nice in black and white with diffused glow effect ;)
I never though about it that way when I saw a new sign!!!
I had a friend who got lights letters from an old sign fixed it and placed it in her hallway! It worked nicely with hip contemporary decorating, is that counted as recycling :P

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/30/2004
Dear Arwa,

thanks a lot for the constructive words.

how do you add the diffused glow in PS?

Take care,
Thilo

Sergio Sánchez   {K:2308} 10/30/2004
As usual, great story and explanation, but I agree with arwa, I believe in b&w would look better, and maybe older, so it would show better what you wanted.

Sergio

Back to the Optio, Thilo? Nice atmosphere with the weatherbeaten sign and the high level of details. I guess I ran out of more constructive comments, so I'll leave it at this.... Not because in retaliation, of course.... Just tired;)

Cheers,

Hugo

Ok its so simple, usually I like it with black and white, but can do it with any image go to filters then distort ? diffuse glow and just change the brightness grain and clearness to ur liking
Hope this helps
And hope u don?t mind my personal touch on your already good image ;)

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 10/30/2004
I like the desatured colors and increase of texture.
Very nice subject.
Greetings dear Thilo.

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 10/31/2004
Excellent composition Thilo... The sign armonizes very well with the brick wall... Definetely if it could talk, it may tell us a lot of stories... It would have seen children grow up... Couples fight... Men grow old... and could teach us many things... as it is teaching now... Life goes on... a time will get to all of us...

Cheers,

MaLuisa

I like the PS work Thilo, it may look a little stronger in B&W but in no way does this look bad :-)

With a sign this size I guess the bakery is pretty good too, I can almost smell the food - guess it must be lunch time here lol

Best wishes,
Steve

Aged look ... well, you succeeded in doing that perfectly! Love your "street sign poem" :)

These signs make me think of capitalism. How corporations - or better, the employees, or even better, the managers - have to run just in order to stay still. Coca Cola has invaded even Russia. It?s a bloody, never-ending battle ... yet, the key to progress.

Pedro Libório   {K:53855} 10/31/2004
quite interesting composition here, and it is interesting because it says almost ...we are everywhere ... Coca-Cola ....and that is indeed true. I do like the presentation and I think you have quite a nice image here..
regards.

Hi Kev,

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/31/2004
Hi Sergio,

thanks for the precious comments. to be honest, I made a bw/IR version as well but then rejected the idea because of the colors in the sign.

anyway, thanks again.
take care,
thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/31/2004
Dear Arwa,

wow, a personal rework ;-) thanks a lot my dear friend.

Now that you mentioned it, I found the filter in PS. it was well hidden in that distorsion area. ;-)

I made a BW version as well with IR filtering but then rejected to use it as I like the colors in the sign so much. but your version shows the past very well. like it!

best wishes,
Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 10/31/2004
Dear MaLuisa,

Uwe Bachmann   {K:10222} 11/1/2004

gutes auge mal wieder bewiesen...

vg, uwe

Jeanette Hägglund   {K:59903} 11/1/2004
Beautiful sign and wonderful patina.

Cenk KIRBAS   {K:1739} 11/1/2004
Good composition. Good way of telling about the east and west comming across. One of those "every picture of you tells a story" . congrats.

By the way I also liked the B&W touch by arwa abdullah.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 11/5/2004
Hi Cenk,

thanks a lot for your constructive feedback.

take care,
thilo
