About This is the second picture from the photographic workshop which took place about one month ago in one of the Polish National Park.

This picture was taken early in the morning on the top of the dune 20 meter high after hard climbing :-)

I tried to use very selective DOF.

The characteristic formations of this Park are dunes which force from the coast line into the land.

I hope you will like it.

Comments are welcomed :-)

Regards

Lukasz

P.S. I know about vignetting but I decided to show you the full frame.

Lukasz this is really nice! Beautiful composition, a natural abstract for sure!

I really like those blads of grass/reeds, (not sure what to call them) the way they have made their patterns in the sand. PERFECT lighting for this, really gives it depth,

Great photograph!
Lori :)

I like your pictures so much, you have an "eye" and a perspective that i really admire. This is so simple but so powerful, the balanced composition and colors make this a very pleasant view.

beautiful work! pozdrawiam

jennifer armstrong   {K:6688} 11/1/2004
beautiful shot, Lukasz. I love how you have captured the stillness & movement of this environment. Wonderfully composed & cropped. Great use of colour. There are dunes just like this on the west coast of Oregon, in the US a ways down the coast from me, & i have often travelled there & marvelled at how steady & yet mutable that environment is - the constant shifting of sand from the off-shore winds & yet the sheer mass of the dunes makes them seem so permanent & somehow solid. Wonderfully captured.

Khaled Mursi Hammoud   {K:53382} 11/5/2004
Excellent perspective, the deep blue color of the sky and the tilted line of the dune with these scratches on the sand are great. Artistic shot Lukasz

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 11/5/2004
Hi Lukasz, I think this is one of the most impressive shots in your portfolio. Very well balanced composition, but also a nice touch of dynamism. The tell tale of the wind, sweeping the last straws of sand in the ruthless and desolated desert and creating those patterns in the sand.... Maybe I'm getting a bit carried away here, but it's the only way to describe that, I feel.

I presume you used a PL filter? The deep tones in the sky fit very well. I would only have removed the shrubs on top of the hill on the right.

The off centered composition is nicely balanced, and I do like the DOF and level of details. Very well captured.

Cheers,

Hugo

Lukasz Kuczkowski   {K:14687} 11/5/2004
Hi Hugo, thanks for your reply and interesting concept - cause I had some problems to answer to your last comment I will do it here;

I agree that there must (should) be a dominant object in the shot - usually this is the object the photographer wants to emphasize in his/her work; it is also wonderful that the other objects in the picture create line(s) which leads the viewer to the dominant object and allow to concentrate on it and your picture above (the main at the top) is a good example of such pictures (IMHO the main object is the peak of the dunes far in the background and the edge leads the viewer's eyes in lovely way there),

but

there are some pictures which does not comply with the above rules
I am just wondering what do you think about this picture

http://www.republika.pl/kuczkowski/photo20.jpg

What about this shot? I also like it but there are some failures I noticed after the picture was uploaded - you can see the vinieting in the right and left lower corner which is not a good thing (here you can find the other version of this shot but this is not the same

http://www.republika.pl/kuczkowski/photo5.jpg

)

I did not want to make any changes in PS to that picture so I left it without them and you can see it as it is on slide;

yes I used here the PL filter which makes the sky stronger and warmer the light;

thanks for your comment; I really appreciate it

regards
Lukasz

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 11/5/2004
Yep! That's exactly what I meant. Although it centers the grass a bit more, which is not necessarily an improvement for the composition, by removing the distraction, the attention is solely focused on the patterns in the sand. Arguably, the more close up view leaves more to the viewers imagination, which increases the tension. Thanks for showing me; very interesting to see the difference.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:185017} 11/5/2004
Hi Lukasz, I agree photo 20 where the rules are conserned. The difference is the nature of the subject. In stead of a landscape, this is more of an abstract. That does change the essence of the shot tremendously, I think. I took a similar / comparable shot (per attached). Different rules apply to different images; or the lack of rules, for that matter... Most important rule, as this images also shows, is that creativity and thoughts cannot be replaced (or described) by rules... Aesthetics is something subjective, thank god!

Cheers,

Hugo

Paul's Photos   {K:35218} 11/6/2004
wow.. very nice image.. love the composition.. I did not know that poland even had this type of landscape.

the lighting and contrasts are great.. nice use of a PL filter to bring out the sky. This image reminds me more of white sands New Mexico than say a beach photo although the sand is not that white :) just the angle of the image and the sky makes it remind me more of a desert..

great work!!

Thank you for your comment on my photo. Your portfolio is wonderful. These photos from the workshop are some of my favorites, and this one is my favorite of those. It is so simple and beautiful; the DOF is perfect. I think the impressions in the sand really add something (maybe balance?).

M.M. Meehan   {K:4119} 1/7/2005
I don't mind the vignetting. The arc in the sand lends itself to the circular vignetting on just the right side.

Excellent sand dunes photo.
