The only rule is "no rules". If this is exactly the result you wanted then it's worked. The thing to do (IMHO) is to look at it in detail and try to imagine how any of it could look better - eg for me (and this is just personal) i would prefer more colour depth, more visibility of the shaded eye, less harsh surface detail of her forehead, some visibility of the hair on both sides and her lips in focus. But if you didn't wish to do these things then it's no problem.
It would stimulate more crits you said "This is what I wanted to do but thatt didn't turn out quite right - any suggestions how to fix / avoid the problems?"
You might be interested to see my photos "Andrea - both sides" (at http://www.usefilm.com/image/600803.html) and "Troubled Harriet" (at http://www.usefilm.com/image/594509.html) which us a similar approach.
Best wishes, Jonathan

Thanks for responding Bill.
After a year of doing the "basics" I thought I'd give something more stylized a try. I do generally try to focus on the eye, unless there is a specific reason why I would not want the eye as the sharpest point of focus. This being something that I was playing around with, I was intentionally putting her in the partial sun to see where I could go with the contrast. I don't have lights yet so my only choice was to use the sunlight that was there. ;) I guess I'm just not ready for prime time yet! LOL! Thanks so much for your comments. Very appreciated. :)
Warmly, Lonnit

Hi Lonnit,.......Since you are starting out and you asked for comments..... May I offer this: Go for the "basics" first ... in other words .... learn and practice the basics of "light".. "focus" and how light works on the subject and shadows. Then you will have more fun .. trying out new things.. and do more. A good start though.
Here's your first tip: Camera's can not focus (with success) on a flat surface. So .. focus on the eye.. more over... the eye lid... or the edge of the nostril .. or edge of the lip... Here'a another ... keep your subject out of "half sunlight.. half shade. .... go for the shade.
Good luck lonnit...... you're on your way. :)))
~~~~~~~~ Warm Regards ....... Bill
Thanks for commenting. I too would rather have had that highlight from her cheek on the dark side to have fallen on her eye instead.
I like her expression very much. The high contrast adds interest, imho, and the blown out area doesn't bother me as I think it gives the shot a dramatic look. The right side of the face is in a bit too much darkness for my taste, though, and I think it would look better if we could see just a bit of light in that eye.
