Richard Thornton   {K:26442} 11/8/2004
Og course, the color is what grabs me for this image. But the tonal range and composition are complimentary, too.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 11/8/2004
Hi Jan, I do find Brugges mesmerising... Especially with this lighting. Expertly composed image, and awesome tones. Straight out of the camera?

Not that this composition has flaws, but just out of curiosity: have you considered a cropped composition, mainly focussing on the right side of the image? I think that consises the view a bit more to the predominant part, whilst preserving the contasts between shadows and sunlit areas. Per attached, a quick and dirty crop, to show you what I mean. (Obviously not necessarily better, and I don't want to mess with your intentions, just a thought...)

Cheers,

Hugo

Jan Symank   {K:15755} 11/8/2004
Hi Hugo !
Thank you very much for your comment.
This is a place I visit sometimes and three weeks before again.
I found this golden light. I wanted it and the reflections to become the main part of the picture.
Often I follow the rules, but not this time :)
As you see in the attached reply to peter Thornton ( please have a look ) I followed there the rules, for ex. thirds and the rule of horizon in the middle when there are reflections.
But the new one was not made by accidet, it was planned as always with tripod and a lot of time.
The bridge , I decided, should be this time out of thirds to support the dynamic diagonal of the left base of houses, close to the reflectons with birds, the other point of interest.
The high contrast was not reduced by a grey grad ( what I often do ) I wanted to show this situation as a part of the impression.
As a result this newer version is more dynamic with contrast and main focus on the left plus reflections, the older one more conservative with the bridge as the point of interest, but not very accented.
Thank you very much for your comments and pictures , which I am highly interested in ,because they help me a lot in self reflection
BTW I admire your admirable work for UF community and your great gallery
Your friend
Jan

Jan Symank   {K:15755} 11/8/2004
Hallo Hugo
PS
your nearly square crop comp is also very nice a, I think next time I ll use the Hasselblad with 150 at aperture 22 for the left side of this canal
Jan

woow!!!! my friend incredible pic, the two versions 7+++++++++++++++++++++++

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184981} 11/8/2004
Hi Jan, Thanks for the elaborate reply... I always enjoy a good discussion about subjective matters. I can relate to the self reflection you get from comments; it's the sole reason I enjoy thinking out loud in my comments; they help me alot, and it's good to hear that it works for you too!

About the rules, I tend to follow them strongly in most cases, but found that breaking, or rather bending the rules of composition ("gulden snede", probably more appropriate than the rule of thirds) often creates the most appealing shots, as they are out of the ordinary, and are more "refreshing" and creative to look at, especially to place the attenion in a more "crouded" scene to a specific aspect, such as the bridge in this one.

I pondered over the composition, and the approach you followed, wondering at first about the "excessive" amount of water, but then concluded that the ducks included in the composition formed a key element, as well as the space needed for the reflection of the flamboyant tones.

About the contrast, I do like a nice and strong contrast of tones; my art teacher taught me to look for complementary hues in the shadow, especially in paintings. In extreme circumstances, that effect also shows in digital images, especially with high saturated photos, such as this one... (see http://www.usefilm.com/image/279217.html, it's pretty evident there)

In all fairness, I think the photo you attached to Peter's reply is less "sparkling", or better, refreshing, as it's not as much out of the ordinary as the one you posted initially.

I spent last christmas in Brugge, and enjoyed the city enormously. Unfortunately, the shutter curtain of my Pentax failed, resulting in below average images... Need to go back soon....

Last, but not least, your compliment is completely mutual...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Groetjes, PEter

Daniel Guerin   {K:7952} 12/28/2004
Jan, your portfolio is exceptional! Sometime when not at work I'll take some time to have a better look at it. I passed through Brugge whilst driving up to Sweden about a year and a half ago. I had no time for photography but wished that I did, it's such a gorgeous place. I love the stark light and strong colours of this image. Beautiful. They all are.

Regards.
