Location City -  Burano
State -  VENETO
Country - Italy   Italy
About Subject background: Burano, small island near Venice, famous for it's small cracy-colored fisher houses. Seen from a fast moving ferry on a very unfriendly day ;-)

PC concept: Tried to bring back some atmosphere of the island... although I didn't want to fake any sky here. I know that image is a bit soft... but my opinion is that this fits better to the somehow soft sky ;-)

Honest feedback highly appreciated.

I know and remember my trip to this place Thilo, it deserves a lot of shot; this one seems to be not crisp in focus as it could be; the composition is lovely instead and I like it vert much

Hi Thilo, eine wunderschöne ,malerische Ecke, mit traumhaften Farben.Die vielen Antennen wirken irgendwie fehl am Platz, sehen aber interessant aus.

Hi there, this has great potential. I like the composition and I think you are right about the softness. There are a couple things that photoshop is good for, without drastically altering the image. You can make the digitized version look as it had when you took the picture, much as you can in a real dark room. I hope you don't mind I played with it a bit in photoshop. I adjusted levels, by removing the high frequencies from the histogram. I did this because in the histogram, none of the image information is in that range, so removing it altogether does not cause any loss of information. I also moved the centre of the spectrum a bit to the left, do darken it a bit and enhance contrast. After this I boosted the saturation a bit.

The difference is not huge, but I think it brings out the colours and atmosphere of the village a bit. And if anybody knows whether what I said about the use of levels is wrong, please let me know...that's how I THINK is works!
Cheers, Marc

Hi Thilo,
Nice composition and perspective, there is only missing little bit stronger contrast.
Take care my friend.
Bye!

Surely you "juiced" the colors, right?? They are striking! This has that wonderful postcard quality. I love it, Thilo! ..Brad

Patrick Jacobson   {K:29151} 11/29/2004
Beutiful colors.. great composition.. i think its to soft though.. would love more sharpness here. Doesnt have to be razor sharp but it feels out of focus now. Keep on working.. =)

Cheers

Hi Antonio,

I'm totally aware of the focus problem (mentioned in the about) but the lighting was bad and I stood at a fast moving ferry ;-)

anyway, thanks for the constructive critics.

Hi Marc,

first of all: thanks for the rework and the constructive comments. I really appreciate your ideas and the time you spent on my picture.

rest assured that I spent A LOT of time working in PS on this image. I won't dare to upload the original image which was in very bad shape due to the lighting and the fast moving ferry. On my monitor, your version looks too bold especially in the darker areas (depends probably on the monitor).

To be honest, I would stay with my version, but anyway thanks a lot for your time.

take care,
thilo

Hi Brad,

yes, I did "some" work on the colors =)

Hi Patrick,

this happens when you're on the road (ship in this case), getting a one shot chance within seconds and having the wrong lens mounted ;-)

thx for the honest words,
thilo

Mark Drago   {K:10854} 11/29/2004
hi Thilo--great "ferry shot"

Efisio Mureddu   {K:12854} 11/29/2004
burano... one of the best place to be.
Great coloured shot

Marc Robin   {K:3385} 11/30/2004
Hi again, it's quite possible my monitor is skewing the colours a bit. It is very old. And also it might not match with your vision of the image. I wasn't there! :-)
Cheers, Marc
PS: you wouldn't put even a bit of contrast enhancement? :-P

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 11/30/2004
Wonderful composition and very nice saturated colors. Greetings.
