About I never thought that youth would go
Who was so blithe and fain,
Or if he strayed I thought a song
Would call him back again.

But knowledge came one April day
And woke me with a start--
When I walked alone in a wooded lane
With perfect peace of heart.

Peter De Rycke   {K:41029} 12/1/2004
Beautiful shot, very spacy .. showing the little child and her big big friend, the tree .. has something of a fairy tale atmosphere .. the white gaze on the photo is less my taste, without it would be as attractive to me !
Peter

Great composition and light. I love the mysterious atmosphere.

Ed Krebs   {K:917} 12/1/2004

Wonderful piece Toni! Like something from Grimm's Fairytales, I half expect to see in the distance a gingerbread house in that otherworldly forest. Where is Hansel?

Jeroen Wenting   {K:25159} 12/5/2004
You know how to use a digital camera and make the output look like it's NOT digital...
Most people do not and their work screams "digicam" from a mile away.

Justin Roberts   {K:382} 12/5/2004
My first thoughts were WOW what a picture but then I came to look at it agin and I feel that it is perhaps a little to contrived. To much sun on the foreground trunks and boughs but far too glum in the background. The balance is all wrong. One wonders what it looked liked pre photoshop?

Just not naturalistic enough for me I'm afraid.

Justin.

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 12/5/2004
C O N G R A T S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21932} 12/5/2004
My congratulation for this wonderful and dreamlike image. It is soft and tender and has a very touching mood.Favorite of course.
Kind regards,Ursula

Justin Roberts   {K:382} 12/5/2004
It would indeed make a great illustration for something like Alice in Wonderland and the skill that has gone into producing it is worth noting, but again I keep looking at it and I keep finding things I don't like. The girls arms strike me as being to long, her small hands would not be able to grip a large branch in the manner shown and she is too far off the ground. How did she get there? Alice In Wonderland stuff indeed.

It's details like this that let down an otherwise delightful image.

There is a thread in the Philosophy forum which touches on the validity or otherwise of considering such pictures photographs. This one, though quite lovely has in my view gone beyond the line.

Yours

Justin (Miserable git) :-)

Francesca May   {K:6877} 12/5/2004
ohh FANTASTIC!

gio4love .   {K:14352} 12/5/2004
What a splendid black&white! it feels like fairystories, like Alice in Wonderland, like Little red Hiding Hood..you may perceive some back wolf behind the trees, but the playful little girl and the boughs are magic. Congratulations!see you

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17531} 12/5/2004
This image is absolutely magical. Wonderful and dreamy, it makes me wonder if the girl is really there or if it is something from my dreams.

Just lovely.

Thank you Krystal, I'm so glad you like it. You can contact me at my e:mail if you wish. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/5/2004
Thanks Jeroen, I try hard on the "digital" effect issue, because I have seen it in my own work, especially when I return to it much later...it really pops out when I overdo. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/5/2004
Thanks Patrick...I appreciate your sentiment to no end. :) T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/5/2004
Justin, I applaud you for finding the faults of this image and stating them. It is what makes Usefilm such a great place to learn. You have touched upon things that detract for you and might improve. I have seen the debate you mention on the philosophical issues. This is placed in the category "photoart" and there is mention of two cameras. I assume it was judged for what it is. Thank you for your candid remarks. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/5/2004
Justin, just another thought for you..there is a place where the magic carries much weight. Mine may do this for some but not for others. Here is an image that I love for this which may fall within the philosophical debate you mention:http://www.usefilm.com/image/23138.html

Istvan VARKONYI   {K:3770} 12/5/2004

E. Haque   {K:433} 12/6/2004
Tony, this is outstanding let me tell you. But was the girl actually there or added later? Her hands look a little odd. I like how moody the whole thing is. Like a shot from the middleeartch type place. :)

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/6/2004
E. thanks for your observation and kind remarks. Her portion was shot with the Nikon. T.

Martin Baker   {K:1282} 12/6/2004
awesome image!,love it;thankyou for your comments...cheers

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 12/6/2004
What curious tones in this photograph. I often chose not to comment when many have done so before me, but I could not pass this one by. Without the girl, I do not think that the light would be very wonderful on this scene, but with her it looks as if it was all set up by a master of lighting. Congrats on the EC too.

Fabrice Gourbilleau   {K:58253} 12/6/2004
Hey you've got it Toni :).. Well deserved!! Congrats ;)

Toni! Wow - what a magical shot here. I love this photo. Editors Pick indeed! Wonderful use and working through this shot. I am in love with this. I am speechless.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 12/6/2004
Stefan, thank you dearly for your generous comment. Your observation has struck a chord with me, because you spotted what was at the core of this creation. My feeling exactly about the woodland without the girl. After working in that image for quite some time to make it live on its own, I concluded to put it away. But then I saw that John Sigler had been in his workshop the same evening on a composite with a beautiful landscape (something quite different), and it inspired me to return to mine to make it what you see now. The poem speaks to my heart about youth and the magic of those woods.

omar imam   {K:5831} 12/6/2004

Ian McIntosh   {K:42170} 1/8/2005
Hi Toni, Very much admire the tone range jhere, what have you done to achieve the greys in the background, it is as if in parts of the frame the contrast brought down but not others, lots to enjoy here, great movement from your(?) child, thanks must go also to the tree.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 1/8/2005
Thank you Ian. I used a very transparent layer of white to bring down the contrast and enhance the DOF in the back and at the top. I was experimenting with the technique. There was a lot of dodging and burning applied here as well. I added the layer as a fill, tweaked the opacity, and then erased (using a soft brush at low opacity) to take away the sections I didn't want. Hope that helps. T.

Abel Minnée   {K:3769} 1/10/2005
SIMPLY FANTASTIC!!

Craig Beckman   {K:419} 1/13/2005
I am in amazement. that has to be one of my favorites!

Excellent! You have done all the talking...
CHeers,
Ben

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 1/13/2005
Toni - this is so so stunning, No wonder it has an award and so many viewings and comments, a very special composition. It is like a fine illustration from an old book. The poem to go with is lovely too. Will add to favourites [Is this the red dress used in some of your other shots]
Margaret

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 1/13/2005
Thanks Margaret. Yes, that is the exact dress! I'm glad you like it so much, and am flattered you placed it in favorites. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 1/13/2005
...oh and Margaret, one more thing...it is the same tree, but the limb from which she hangs has since been cut off. You can see it above Rachel's head in "Woodland Princess"!

Evelyn Mayes   {K:8132} 1/13/2005
I like the surreal quality and the contrast between the massive rooted tree and the very small girl swinging lightly on a flight of fancy. The dusky atmosphere is full of secrets and the path of life is not straight. The poem you chose to accompany it is perfect.

Ben Mok   {K:4084} 1/14/2005
Hi Toni :)
What I meant by "you have done all the talking" is that your photo spoke for itself and your about left me to think back to the old days......
:)
Ben

Tim Long   {K:9225} 1/15/2005
Stunning. Bravo, Toni! (Already added to Favorites...)

Carsten Ranke   {K:14461} 1/16/2005
What can I say, coming late ... One of the best shots I ever saw. Artistic, dreamy, poetic, surreal... I will have a close look at your portfolio ! BTW: the preview pics on usefilm are too small, IMO (at least on my monitor)

Tiger Lily     {K:11096} 1/21/2005
Toni, Gorgeous picture down to the pleated skirt detail. Just an amateur here but I am guessing you blurred the tip of the skirt in PS. The overall picture looks like it's straight from a fairy tale. I disagree with the other commentator that the arms of the child are not hanging/looking right. I think in the small/medium versions of the photo, everything looks fantastically realistic. It looked so real in fact that I am thinking she better get out of there, it looks like a creepy kinda place! :-) So your picture is able to convey all those emotions to the viewer.

Did you take the girl's picture separately on a different background and lighting, extracted her from there and then pasted her into the tree picture?

However you did it, this is a stunning piece of art.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 1/21/2005
Lily, thank you for your comment and praise. The girl was captured separately with the Nikon, the woods with the Casio. She was in completely different lighting, but it was compatible enough to work into the image. It was good fortune, as it was not planned at all to begin with. While I note that two cameras were employed so that the viewer could be tipped off to the fact that this is a composite, I did not put anything in the "about" because it would have stolen the magic to have everything spelled out after the sentiment of the poem.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 1/21/2005
...and Lily, I forgot to answer you regarding the blur on the skirt: It was in the original as she was kicking out, but I think I may have added a little to the edge to blend, but I don't recall now. T.

Richard Dakin   {K:12915} 1/25/2005
Hi Antonia. After you made mention of this image in your comment on my work, I just had to have a
second look. The image is not for everyone (not for the realists for sure), but that is the nature of art anyway. I am sure there were many serious painters that scorned the abstract expressionists, as their work was first getting noticed. Fantasy, be it literature or digital imaging asks for a belief in something that not everyone can be comfortable with. I for one refuse to read any novel with talking animals, or animals given any human characteristics. Does that mean there is something wrong with those books. Of course not, and there is nothing WRONG with creating a digital fantasy as you have here. Personally I think the scene stands on it's own without the girl, but that is just my personal opinion. I can certainly appreciate the technical expertise, and the creativity that went into this. You paint beautiful pictures with light. As a comparison I think my portfolio shows I predominately paint with dark. Congrats on the award Toni, it is well deserved.

Stefanos Kouroupis   {K:3167} 2/3/2005
it definately has something out of a tim burton's fantasy

mick ryan   {K:160} 2/3/2005
I love the image. I can only echo the comments above about the magical fairy tale quality. The trees are fantastic. My only grumble is that the girl looks badly photoshopped in. She just doesn't convince me that she's there, and not in a magical way. But it's a great concept and overall a great image that deserves all the attention that it's getting. Well done.

(I think I'll head over to your gallery to see your other photos now.)

ISMAEL MARCOS   {K:10283} 2/3/2005

Jenny Brown   {K:2859} 2/3/2005
As a woman who used to be a tree-climbing girl, I'm finding this picture to feel very artificial; she's too small, too far off the ground, and clearly couldn't have gotten into that position. I believe it could be fixed with the same originals though - just make her proportionately a bit bigger, so her hands are large enough for the branch, and her feet close enough to the ground to have perhaps jumped up. She looks lovely and this image could work, but it feels sufficiently disproportionate right now that it doesn't click with my heart like I know it could. If she looked more real here, you would have little girls falling all over it in joy and wonder.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 2/3/2005
Carsten, your PS skills as they are, that is much appreciated. This one has certainly hit people every which way!

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 2/4/2005
Interesting observations, Jenny, thanks. Your points are well-taken, and were considerations that had to be weighed by me in creating the image. I tried various ways of sizing her, and this way was my preference (albeit a compromise) based on the way it worked with the overall composition. Making her larger brings her forward to the viewer and alters the balance of space above and below her. I had no trouble conceiving her being that high up. It is a low branch, as it happens --one that I could have lifted her to or that she could have crawled out on to hang from. You might like to see where it used to be, as it appears in "Magical Thinking II" in my portfolio (sadly, it has been lopped of since my first captures of it).

Erik Neldner   {K:10896} 2/4/2005

Donald Hanson   {K:460} 4/22/2005
It is a great picture.......Without reading all the other comments, I have too wonder if you didn't place the child in the picture digitally. The light seems to be coming from the other side and it looks like it would be quite difficult for her to hold on to that branch. Oh, nevermind, I love it anyhow.......

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 4/22/2005
Donald, glad you like it anyway ;) Antonia

Paul Lara   {K:86852} 7/9/2005
Your dodging and burning is to excellent effect, Antonia.
You may want to try something I picked up here:
Instead of using a brush with dodge and burn...choose Soft Light mode, down to about 20% 20% and then switch between black and white brushes to get a much more subtle effect than the dodge / burn tool.

What an adorable shot.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30194} 7/10/2005
Paul, thanks for the kind remarks and the tip. I'll return your favor with a new technique I just picked up from Epson's "Online Experience, Sculpting with Mac Holbert":
Create a Burn & Dodge Layer
Select layer>New>Layer.
*Name the new layer
*Mode: Select Overlay or Soft Light. Check "Fill with Overlay-neutral color (50% gray).
*Click OK
Brushing the image with a Burn darkens the underlying image. Brushing with a Dodge has a lightening effect.
Now I'll confess that I haven't employed the technique, and have only observed it on the video. So now I have two new techniques to try, Mac's and yours. :) Please let me know if you try it and what you think.

Antonia

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind;
In the primal sympathy
Which having been must ever be;
In the soothing thoughts that spring
Out of human suffering;
In the faith that looks through death,
In years that bring the philosophic mind.
