About I never thought that youth would go
Who was so blithe and fain,
Or if he strayed I thought a song
Would call him back again.

But knowledge came one April day
And woke me with a start--
When I walked alone in a wooded lane
With perfect peace of heart.

Beautiful shot, very spacy .. showing the little child and her big big friend, the tree .. has something of a fairy tale atmosphere .. the white gaze on the photo is less my taste, without it would be as attractive to me !

Jeroen Wenting   {K:24861} 12/5/2004
You know how to use a digital camera and make the output look like it's NOT digital...
Most people do not and their work screams "digicam" from a mile away.

Justin Roberts   {K:382} 12/5/2004
My first thoughts were WOW what a picture but then I came to look at it agin and I feel that it is perhaps a little to contrived. To much sun on the foreground trunks and boughs but far too glum in the background. The balance is all wrong. One wonders what it looked liked pre photoshop?

Just not naturalistic enough for me I'm afraid.

Justin.

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 12/5/2004
C O N G R A T S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 12/5/2004
My congratulation for this wonderful and dreamlike image. It is soft and tender and has a very touching mood.Favorite of course.
Kind regards,Ursula

Justin Roberts   {K:382} 12/5/2004
It would indeed make a great illustration for something like Alice in Wonderland and the skill that has gone into producing it is worth noting, but again I keep looking at it and I keep finding things I don't like. The girls arms strike me as being to long, her small hands would not be able to grip a large branch in the manner shown and she is too far off the ground. How did she get there? Alice In Wonderland stuff indeed.

It's details like this that let down an otherwise delightful image.

There is a thread in the Philosophy forum which touches on the validity or otherwise of considering such pictures photographs. This one, though quite lovely has in my view gone beyond the line.

Yours

Justin (Miserable git) :-)

Francesca May   {K:6877} 12/5/2004
ohh FANTASTIC!

gio4love .   {K:14136} 12/5/2004
What a splendid black&white! it feels like fairystories, like Alice in Wonderland, like Little red Hiding Hood..you may perceive some back wolf behind the trees, but the playful little girl and the boughs are magic. Congratulations!see you

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 12/5/2004
This image is absolutely magical. Wonderful and dreamy, it makes me wonder if the girl is really there or if it is something from my dreams.

Just lovely.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/5/2004
Thanks Jeroen, I try hard on the "digital" effect issue, because I have seen it in my own work, especially when I return to it much later...it really pops out when I overdo. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/5/2004
Thanks Patrick...I appreciate your sentiment to no end. :) T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/5/2004
Justin, I applaud you for finding the faults of this image and stating them. It is what makes Usefilm such a great place to learn. You have touched upon things that detract for you and might improve. I have seen the debate you mention on the philosophical issues. This is placed in the category "photoart" and there is mention of two cameras. I assume it was judged for what it is. Thank you for your candid remarks. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/5/2004
Justin, just another thought for you..there is a place where the magic carries much weight. Mine may do this for some but not for others. Here is an image that I love for this which may fall within the philosophical debate you mention:http://www.usefilm.com/image/23138.html

Istvan VARKONYI   {K:3770} 12/5/2004

E. Haque   {K:433} 12/6/2004
Tony, this is outstanding let me tell you. But was the girl actually there or added later? Her hands look a little odd. I like how moody the whole thing is. Like a shot from the middleeartch type place. :)

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/6/2004
E. thanks for your observation and kind remarks. Her portion was shot with the Nikon. T.

Martin Baker   {K:1282} 12/6/2004
awesome image!,love it;thankyou for your comments...cheers

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 12/6/2004
What curious tones in this photograph. I often chose not to comment when many have done so before me, but I could not pass this one by. Without the girl, I do not think that the light would be very wonderful on this scene, but with her it looks as if it was all set up by a master of lighting. Congrats on the EC too.

Fabrice Gourbilleau   {K:53288} 12/6/2004
Hey you've got it Toni :).. Well deserved!! Congrats ;)

Toni! Wow - what a magical shot here. I love this photo. Editors Pick indeed! Wonderful use and working through this shot. I am in love with this. I am speechless.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 12/6/2004
Stefan, thank you dearly for your generous comment. Your observation has struck a chord with me, because you spotted what was at the core of this creation. My feeling exactly about the woodland without the girl. After working in that image for quite some time to make it live on its own, I concluded to put it away. But then I saw that John Sigler had been in his workshop the same evening on a composite with a beautiful landscape (something quite different), and it inspired me to return to mine to make it what you see now. The poem speaks to my heart about youth and the magic of those woods.

omar imam   {K:5559} 12/6/2004

Ian McIntosh   {K:38813} 1/8/2005
Hi Toni, Very much admire the tone range jhere, what have you done to achieve the greys in the background, it is as if in parts of the frame the contrast brought down but not others, lots to enjoy here, great movement from your(?) child, thanks must go also to the tree.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 1/8/2005
Thank you Ian. I used a very transparent layer of white to bring down the contrast and enhance the DOF in the back and at the top. I was experimenting with the technique. There was a lot of dodging and burning applied here as well. I added the layer as a fill, tweaked the opacity, and then erased (using a soft brush at low opacity) to take away the sections I didn't want. Hope that helps. T.

Abel Minnée   {K:3769} 1/10/2005
SIMPLY FANTASTIC!!

Craig Beckman   {K:419} 1/13/2005

Margaret Sturgess   {K:49403} 1/13/2005
Toni - this is so so stunning, No wonder it has an award and so many viewings and comments, a very special composition. It is like a fine illustration from an old book. The poem to go with is lovely too. Will add to favourites [Is this the red dress used in some of your other shots]
Margaret

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 1/13/2005
Thanks Margaret. Yes, that is the exact dress! I'm glad you like it so much, and am flattered you placed it in favorites. T.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 1/13/2005
...oh and Margaret, one more thing...it is the same tree, but the limb from which she hangs has since been cut off. You can see it above Rachel's head in "Woodland Princess"!
