About Leaving Te Ika A Maui and coming down to Te Wai Pounamu I had to find my context.
This vitriolic protest was an enigma. All I had known of Aramoana was that a subscriber to soldier of fortune magazine murdered 12 people here in 1990. The place means infintely more to those who are near it.
It is a protest against an aluminium smelter proposed 1980.
As a record of the protest it fails. A tree has grown over "stop it".
I am grateful for coke cans and am glad they aren't produced there.

Wow... also. I didn't know you had paved roads! (I get the message and the pic is grand, well... I had to be a smart arse...just leaps out at times, sorry) :)

Ian -- I think this is truly a wonderful iamge ...great about although as a yank I'm sure I don't quite understand it -- but that's the beauty of it all...K

Ian McIntosh   {K:39518} 12/15/2004
Well it's that context thang.
I assume the maori is a curve ball.
"Te wai pounamu", rivers of jade, The South island.
Te ika a maui, The fish of maui, The North Island.
Trust this makes it all crystal.
Been a great year Kevin.

back home? I?ve seen this before. I believe that Aramoana is a magic place.

Ian McIntosh   {K:39518} 12/15/2004
Yup, back home, only there for 4 nights!
Splurged all our money to see a friend in Tonga then came back to be told to go to Brizzie for my brothers wedding!
Yup, it's a re-post, for the new project.
What have you done that your happiest about?

Ian McIntosh   {K:39518} 12/15/2004
This'd be my favourite but the shaving props is a rare sight anywhere on the planet.

Ian McIntosh   {K:39518} 12/15/2004

Ian, congratulations on this one. You have captured some of the ethos that one feels in the village. I have enjoyed your pictures during the year, keep up the good work in 2005.

this is a poor women which lives in highlands in Romania. What I am happiest about? Probably http://www.usefilm.com/image/530671.html or http://www.usefilm.com/image/501244.html. Shaving props started my rugby project. It was a stong impulse :-).

It was probably the Americans during the war.
We have only now completed a short cut in the highway to our capital city they proposed in '43

John Bohner   {K:8232} 12/16/2004
Ian looks like that protest was more sucessfull than the Rainbow Warrior was. Strange image. I like your treatment of it. jb
