Absolutely stunning. Oddly enough, it reminds me of old Gumby and Polky animateds, which had some very interesting cinematography going on in them. So... what is it?

Hi Jon and Michael,

Thanks for your comment. As Michael suggests it is a metal grating; it's part of a set of bizarre sculptures outside a local mall. They are lit up at night, and that's the light I relied on. I didn't have a tripod so I just held the camera against the grating. The background is so black because it's not lit up at all ( i think it may actually be sky in the background).
