About Again - for Den Thomson.

One of a number of slides taken in the late 1970s and early 1980's. This one taken at Eastleigh near Southampton.

Sort of topical in that it was announced a couple of days ago the Eastliegh railway locomotive and engineering works is to close next year.

Another good railways scene. I live in Tywyn which has the home to the Talyllyn Railway. It's where the Rev Audrey got the idea for Thomas the Tank Engine. Gets busy here in the summer ;)

The lines of the track lead the eyes nicely through the scene :)

Howie,

It's funny - but when I looked at your updated portfolio, I saw the Wedding photos and it reminded me of the honeymoon my wife and I had in Wales.

One of the places we visited was the Talyllyn railway, but that will 20years ago next August! :)

I only visited Eastleigh once Neil, that was in 1962. What a shame another of the old railway institutions is to disappear. As a lad there was a number of works we tried to visit, mainly in the northern parts of the country. PLaces like Crewe, Derby, Horwich, Doncaster, Swindon and of course Eastleigh. Alas none exist now.
I would say that this shot is a shadow of it's former glory. Thanks for sharing.

Call that a railway? Hm, reminds me why I left the UK... You can still capture some great pics there though!

A very busy scene, Neil! Just goes to show how our photos can be ageless! Nice to see these shots!

Best wishes,
Steve

I would agree that all the interesting trains are nearly all now in museums or preserved railways.

But as to "all" the trains going - not a chance.

The reason there has been such a deterioration in the railway services in the UK over the last few years is because there has been a massive increase in usage (from people trying to avoid traffic problems). This was linked to an underinvestment in the infrastructure and safety so that now its all catch-up time. The main issue from my point of view was the total lack of foresight in the '50s and '60s when such a lot of rail infrastructure was not only shutdown but bulldozed away. Other countries in Europe shut the lines but kept and maintained the structures so that they were able to revitalise them when the time came. They are so much further ahead now - which is why we buy so much of our rolling stock from them.

Sorry - a bit of a hobby horse of mine!

Neil
