About I originally shot this for part of a University assignment about seven months ago. This skater was eleven years old, and about half my height, but he could skate like a pro.

Justin,

I think this the composition and exposure of this photo are done really well in any typical situation. But I struggle with this photo. It's hard for me to truely appreciate the "trick" that this 11 year old is doing at the moment because I don't have any thing to gauge how "big" he's going. I'd love to see the same photo from a distance, with all the elements of depth included, but also be able to see the bottom of that bowl, snakerun, quaterpipe, or whatever it is. That way I get a feeling for how fast he was going, and how far out he is. If its a 3 foot ramp, thats a HUGE air, if its a 8 foot ramp it's decent. And where is he going to? Is this a transfer? Is it a gap? is it over a hip? I can't tell and it bugs me. I guess the photos really begs for more. Which for me is bad in this situation, because to judge it as a photo of a good skater, I need to know what the other elements that played a factor are/were.

Hope that made sense.

I think its exposed well, its a good technical photo, but for a skate photo, it doesn't work well for me.

Cheers,
Toby

A critique from the pro of extreme sport photography, I am flattered =) Now you mention these things, I can see what you mean. I took this about nine months ago. It was an assigned image with the intent of freezing motion, so I think I succeeded in those terms. As a result, I now see my position wasn’t very optimal because all the shots I have (transparencies) are in the same area, and I cannot now feel much depth in them either. But, I can illustrate to you how it was; I am quite unfamiliar with the terminology, but it is a transfer and the ramp(?) is about one meter high (3.3 feet). Now I can see what you mean and I don’t think I did this little fellow (Michael) justice; he was incredible, I have never seen anything quite so insane on a skateboard.

Thank you Tobiah, your input is greatly appreciated.

- Justin
