This is a color repost of one of my favorite shots. So far, I've sold two 8"x12"s and a 16"x24" of this shot...and all three the color version of course.

This is a great shot, Chris! The texture of the water is perfect, the composition is really nice, I love the water glistening on the rocks, and the color of the little leafs really adds to the image. Well done!

This is really beautiful Chris. The long exposure on this kind of photos works always fine but those leafs in the foreground make the photo IMHO.

Stephen Bowden   {K:64516} 1/1/2005
Chris, this is absolutely beautiful - although I am biased towards water scenes like this :-)

The composition and detail are great.

I hope you had a fabulous time last night, I stayed on Turkish beer and remained fairly normal (I'm not a big drinker lol).

Best wishes and a very Happy New Year,
Steve

Dave Arnold   {K:55551} 1/7/2005
Chris, this is absolutley gorgeous. And thanks for the exposure info, too. There's nothing like that around Dallas but soon, just soon, I will hopefully be in a place where I can get the "waterfall" long exposure. I can understand why you've sold prints of it. Kudos

Thanks so much for the long lesson in jpg. I understand now what you mean by jpg shelf life. I guess another way around that is to always maintain an original and use that for any type of production work.

I have not shot tif or RAW, mostly because of the file sizes. Typically in my work, jpgs are fins. Since I shoot high res at all times, the photos I take are way above my client's expectations. But maybe I'll start changing to tif mode when doing hobby shots. Then next, I'll try and understand the RAW puzzle. From what I read, it's not as easy to work with as a simple jpg file??

Thanks and all the best,
Dave

Hi Dave, thanks for the comment. Digital imaging is a long and tricky process to really get down, but it's worth it in the long run. And no - RAW files are mos def not as easy to work w/ as jpegs, but once you really understand the benefits it becomes a pretty clear choice to make. I'm not sure if PS7 supports RAW files or not, I just got CS and it's great - being able to open up the .crw's right in photoshop is a real time saver. The raw format is really the closest thing yet to a digital negative, and once you set up the proper workflow, it's basiclly as easy as the .jpg one you're used to.

Here's an easy solution to the .jpg problem you have - shoot in .jpg, but as soon as you transfer them to your computer, save the best ones right away as tiffs. Then you only compress them once - in the camera, not the potential dozen or more times later every time you open and save them.

On file size - I only have 512 and a 256 CF cards, but I can take 69 RAW shots on the 512 + another 35 or so on the 256, for a total of about 100 shots which is the most I typically take in one shoot. But I am looking at getting another 1 or 2 GB card in the near future.

Cheers,
Chris

Time exposure was right. Excellent composition. Great photo

Sam Andre   {K:12436} 1/8/2005
that people like such a shot despite the shutter speed... I'd go for the sparkles...

Chris Hunter   {K:25631} 1/8/2005
Yes Sam - different people like things for different reasons.

Regards,
Chris

Dave:

I have some hints as well for RAW vs. JPG - I've been shooting RAW on my Nikon for a long time now and using Photoshop 7. You can ask me questions at mkanemoto at gmail dot com.

Alan Harbaugh   {K:16} 2/3/2005
Absolutely wonderful. I was googling "long exposure" canon digital rebel, and came across your image which is exactly what I am trying to do as well with a waterfall near me. I am having trouble controlling the exposure however. Did you take this on an overcast day or was it shady?
If not obvious, I am a total newb...

Again, fantastic shot!

Robert Lloyd   {K:9917} 3/21/2005
lovely shot chris and its much better in usa than uk

Christopher Kosegarten   {K:113} 3/22/2005
Great shot. I'm from the Newport area too.Can I ask you two ?'s.

1.where do you have your enlargements made
2. Is Melville Pond public or do you have to go through the camp grounds.

Thanks.

Felix Nieves   {K:1143} 4/18/2005
