Very nice! I like the color of the eye - what did you retouch?

AAT SA   {K:4565} 12/30/2004
beautiful portrait

Justin Schaller   {K:3781} 12/30/2004
Thank you for your interest Amy. I was not game to write about it earlier, but the majority of this has been altered or edited im some way; the original idea was a little gradge I had with a uni lecturer of mine who had told me I could never retouch an underexposed, unsharp image to a point where it is acceptable. So I tried, and here is the result.

The original image (intentionally bad) was so bad I almost deny taking it!. Ok, so here's the run down; I lightened the whole image with colour levels, etc. I removed all blemishes to clear the skin; I removed most of a crease (naturally caused when we smile). I lightened the whites of her eyes, and the area below her eye. The Iris howerer only took a little saturation to bring out the depth in the green. I darkened her lips and repositioned a little of her hair. I then air brushed all the skin tones in the shot to even it all out.

The final file was 167mb, and consisted of 24 layers.

Great portrait - nice and tight composition, dept and modern enough to be considered original work. I like the b&w too, at the same time its a shame to lose those magnificent green eyes.

I think the only thing left to do here is leave the green eyes on the b&w - its worth a shot!

the posture is good. i like the colour of the eye but the picture is not very sharp.

hey Justin, may be an example of why it's better/easier/more satisfying to try a little harder at the exposing stage

Justin Schaller   {K:3781} 12/30/2004
It is a perfect example Ray =). I am not one to take a photograph and not know what the result will be. I am a compulsive perfectionist, so I can assure you that incorrect exposure is not anything of a problem, this was merely to satisfy an incredibly stubborn grudge as my reply to the lovely Amy Flemming implies.

Thank you for your comments,
- Justin

I viewed both versions of this photo and I have to say that the colorized version is OUTSTANDING! I usually prefer B&W portraits, but what you have created here with your retouching skills is amazing. Your choice of crop works well here and the green eye is mesmerizing. Excellent work here!

Justin Schaller   {K:3781} 12/30/2004
Thank you Ciana, your comments are greatly appreciated. I will agree with you, in that I (generally) prefer portraits in monochrome, and I can see by your impressive and lively portfolio that you concur.

I have only recently started retouching, so I am anxious that much of my work (another is a previous upload entitled "Don't Worry, Be Happy" which was my very first retouching job) seems too fake, or unreal. So your words brought light to my day.

Thank you.

I suppose I am in the minority, although I like this image, I really like the B&W much better...The b&w version seems to appear to have much sharper details and contrast, where as this image appears a little more flat..Irreguardless, your work is always superb, both images are great, but if I had to compare and pick between the two, it would def be the B&W..

I am obviously bored this morning so I played around with the images a bit and added the green eye.....

P.S. Just wanted to add, that after reading the process in which you edited this photo, you did an excellent job in airbrushing the model, the seams are flawless =)
