About Hi Everybody,

For this shot, I had to wedge the camera on a rail, as I didn't have a tripod at hand. (had to leave it at home, and take work stuff instead). Still, I think my shots came out allright...:) The christmas decorations on Hong Kong Skyscrapers was a feast for the eye, though...:) Maybe not as creative as I would've liked, and there are probably 13 a dozen of these views, but it's an amazing view...

Actual camera settings:

ISO 200
Aperture f/2.8
Shutter 1/10'
Exposure: -1.3 EV

Cheers,

Hugo

Verena Rentrop   {K:14417} 1/5/2005
there may be several versions, but this is the first one which I saw...to be honest I'm not a big fan of night skyscraper...to take the part out of it which I like...it is the four colour reflection band on the water...for sure it doesn't work out as a detail shot ;)

a personal suggestion, cropping a lot of the dark sky...would highlight the water reflection...

Cheers,
Verena

Jaap Poot   {K:7926} 1/5/2005
Hong kong is deze tijd van het jaar altijd wel mooi qua licht en kerstversiering, wil nog wel eens keertje terug

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47515} 1/5/2005
A seaside free amusement,, a colourful reflection night shot and you did manage to show perfectly the towers shape and the neon lights decoration on the building facades clearly ..Lucky enough not to degrade the sky, as the reflection is limited on the central water surface the main attraction is the skyscrapers. I found it creative and an eye catcher night shot. Saeed

Hi Hugo,

I can imagine that when one is standing in front of such sceneries, one can hardly suppress the tentation .. not only a feast for the eye, also for the camera !!

Well taken, good sharpness and exposure ..

Peter

Nuno Murias   {K:5311} 1/5/2005

tom rumland   {K:14874} 1/5/2005
hugo, this is amazing! incredibly sharp for this type of shot. remember my san diego shots? :^) i hardly ever leave home sans tripod, as you know, but i'll have to remember this trick. love the way the blue color from the lights at the top of the buildings is diffused by the mist. interesting too how the lights on the mountain form a nice little outline in the background. i gotta try this again.... well done!

take care,
tom

Manu     {K:13015} 1/5/2005
Excellent balance and composition. Colors especially the blue searchlight lend a lot to the top of the picture.

Well done

Lukasz Kuczkowski   {K:14684} 1/5/2005
like the visible details of the night city here;
the light balance is good and exposition seems to be correct so there are no strong points of light from one side and the dark places from the other which makes this picture really interesting, Hugo;
like also the colorful reflections on the water - they make a natural path to the city and smoothly leads my eyes there;
anyway, good work
regards
Lukasz

Aira Manna   {K:11201} 1/5/2005

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/6/2005
Hi Verena, I thought of that suggestion / compostion, but decided against it, as I noticed many shots that emphasise the reflection have the horizon interesecting with the horizontal centerline (~1:2 division of the frame). As you know, I always notice those things, and although it is a very useful and balanced option, it's not something that I think is ideal. Still, my solution makes it more of a post card than anything else.

As always, I appreciate your honest opinion, thanks!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/6/2005
Hi Ian, I always enjoy your profound and poetic comments, thanks!

Hi Peter, you're right... You wouldn't believe how many shots I made during the one day I had the chance to explore HK... I think I'll post a few more in the near future.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/6/2005
Hi Tom, shoving the camera and wedging it to something rigid works very well, it saves me carrying a tripod... Besides, the tripods I own are to flimsy to be of any real use. I find this wedging method very useful, and eventhough it limits the choice of view points at times, there's always something nearby to wedge the camera against...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Groeten,

Hugo

O the tough of filigree I see
Was garbled whence it came from me
And such hirsute obfiscation
Is as the fatuously glanced maiden.
Wont lift her veil with my hand
Shall let the goodly typo stand.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/6/2005
Hi Elisa, thank you for your very kind comments. Just in the nick of time, I wish you all the best for a healthy, prosperous and photograpically perfect 2005!

Hugo, this is beautiful. You have found the balance between reality and dreams. I am impressed that you shot this without a tripod.

The light haze above the city has a magical appeal.

Glad to see this!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 1/6/2005
Thanks Mary Sue! Very good to hear from you again... How've you been? Wedging the camera is something I do quite often when travelling. It saves the weight of a tripod....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Ah Hugo.... my little 8 yr old brother's name is Hugo :)
Anyway that is one thing I really miss about my birthplace!!!! Kowloon usually has better light decorations than HK Island (your photo). But the harbour view is brilliant.
Well Done!

Hi Hugo,

WOW WOW WOW!!!
I missed this one, yesterday finally the site speed was better, prior to that, I haven't left too many comments. So, now I'm going back to see what all I missed.

DEAR HUGH.......THIS IS AWESOME INDEED!!
And I thought the one I saw yesterday was perfect.....This is right up there with that one.

Love the colored reflections, naturally! Everything about this image just 'sings'.

Very nice job,

Fantastic photo! The colors is wonderful! Congrats. Thanks for your comment.

John Griep   {K:2518} 1/11/2005
13 in a dozen, you must be joking Hugo. Most impresive harbour scene of the world.
Been there a few years ago, the view from Kowloon is highly addictive, tell you the truth I watched it every evening.
When it's getting darker and all those lights are coming to life people around you are becoming very quiet.
Peaceful after a rush day in Hong Kong.

Great city if you like to take photographs ;)
Groet John

Zeev Scharf   {K:24587} 1/11/2005

Very good composition. Exposure is fine, with no noise. Does it mean a "Silent Night" ?

Carol Cefalu   {K:7491} 1/13/2005
I have no words to match that already stated...

Simply perfect!

Mark Mahar   {K:3227} 1/13/2005
Hugo thanks for the comment on Sierra Nevada...this is as you say, a postcard, a very good one at that. Love the "color band" on the water. Could well have said "Merry Christmas from Hong Kong" Definitely have to use the wedge trick as I have seen many a night shot and said " dang, forgot my tripod"...Thanks.

Alex Comaschi   {K:1319} 1/16/2005
Excellent shot Hugo! I like very much the nightshots. This one is of high class! The brightness of colors on the sea look like a rainbow...

Hi Hugo,
Lot of thanks for commenting me. It's my first steps in Usefilm forum, and you are the third person who comment me.
Your piture: 'A good view...' is beautiful one and many people like me will love it. Excellent composition. The colors and their reflection in the water give the main tone and lets the picture to flow to both sides. From this moment imagination starts on.
Best regards, uri.

taran     {K:1525} 3/14/2007
It's by far the greatest cityscape on earth, no matter what anyone says. The best pictures are during the chinese new year, where they throw up all those fireworks in the middle of the harbor. Thanks for sharing your HK memories, I miss the place so much (lived there for 12 years).

cheers, t

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 3/14/2007
Hi Taran,

Yeah, HK is great.... Haven't actually lived there, but I do get the chance of visiting regularly.... Around december / january is a great time to be there; found it too hot and stuffy in July... But a great city and skyline indeed....

Cheers,

Hugo
