About This is an image taken from the edge of Brothers Water in The English Lake District about 5 minutes before dawn. The 40 second exposure has blurred both the sky and the water which is just as well as the wind was blowing like crazy and I was struggling to hold the tripod down! Funny how the camera can produce such a feeling of calm in such conditions. I used a 2 stop hard ND grad filter and a 3 stop soft ND grad filter to reduce the brightness of the sky and an 81B warm-up filter to bring out the colour in the wood.

Great effect Barry!! Excellent composition. I like the way the log leads your eye to the hills in the background. Well done indeed!

Beautiful composition! It sounds as if you had an awful lot of glass in front of the lens, but obviously that wasn't a problem here.

Really impressive. It gives a sense of "quiete before the storm". 45 seconds is really a slow and hard shutter time, compliments for the patience ;)

May I ask you about filters? If you shot in RAW mode, you can just decrease exposition or decrease lights, etc. 81B is very easy to emulate in PS, R=250, G=228, B=181. What real advantages of filters usage?
TIA
Regards,
Serge

Serge, I use the 81B for a few of reasons: The main reason is that I shoot both film and digital and I often set up the film shot with the digital camera then just move the filter over to the other camera. The second reason is that I like to create a scene in camera and this means getting the colour balance and light how I want them. The third reason is that any colour manipulation in Photoshop or by using anything other than the default colour balance in camera can cause noise. This is a subject covered in some depth in a recent issue of Amateur Photographer.

Amazing what a still calm feeling it has to it, and yet it was just the opposite. Lovely lines

Very nice and serene capture here. Compositionally this is very strong, using the classic S curve of the land mass. The colors and hues work together very nicely to produce this tranquil and peaceful setting, from a dream.

I like it a lot, including the composition which manages to integrate foreground, middle and background very nicely. Thanks for all the technical detail - very interesting and educational for me.
