beautiful.. love the shallow depth of field and how the blurry hands leads to Maya's eyes!
well done

I really like the DOF and the grain adds to the overal photo. Great shot!

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 1/7/2005
Thanks everyone for their feedback! It is much appreciated.

Yes the depth of field is small and blurs away a lot. I like this very much, actually so much that I got my medium format camera.

I think the reason I like it so much is because that is the way I see things. My perception is just like that. I focus on one thing, I see things as single enteties. Using a wide field of view and focus on one thing is true for both my perception and my photography. Depth of field is the photographic equivalent of putting my attention on one thing in the real world.

This photo is all about my daughter's expression sharing food with me. I wanted to capture the joy she has, even stretching. I like the photo because it shows exactly her satisfaction in giving me something. The positive experience of making someone else happy by giving him something, that's what this moment is all about to me. What she is giving, how, the circumstances are irrelevent. You can just see enough to understand whats going on and that's enough. I'm actually glad the her left hand is kind of dark so it draws less attention. It's all about her face.

Just my thoughts.

g'day David, a wonderful image, I totally agree with comments above, for me good photography is presenting 'the' subject in an interesting way and de-emphasising the elements that distract from it

in this image the subject/story/most important element is the beautiful childs face and the proffered hand, shallow DOF has been used to perfection, I don't mind the blur in the outstretched hand, but it could be made more dominant if it was lightened and the other hand darkened, this would change the weighting/interest factor from the less important element to the more important

this is but the basis for an execellent image, if this were mine I would reprint with slightly higher contrast, dodge left hand to lighten, burn in right hand to darken, burn in the lighter parts of the child's top to make less obvious, and burn in all sides to hold attention to the centre

Adorable photo! I love the perspective. You might want to post this one in the "Perspective" project. A little more contrast and you got yourself a winner! Well done!

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 1/7/2005
thanks for the ideas! Vignetting it might help put more attention to the center. I think reversing the hand brightness would be rather difficult to get right. Once I'm through developing and scanning the box full of films here I'm go back to this photo.

just takes practice David, it doesn't matter how, or how well you do it, the biggest learning curve is knowing what to do

how you do it is technique, knowing you need to do it is art

Sara Cosby   {K:2704} 1/8/2005
I can see that I am DEFINITELY not the only one to see the intrigue and beauty in this shot! I adore the stretching up and the overhead perspective. and the light coming in at her face from the side seemingly under the viewer just seems to light up her face so stealthily you nearly miss it's key role. I also really like all the straight lines of the table and its top's design pushes your focus to her and then the curves of the chair behind her mimick her eyes and her head and also pull the focus back to her face. You've really captured a treasured timeless moment! GREAT JOB!

OH! and thank you for your comments and ALL your help in Someday (bw)!! :)

great DOF

Amanda Radovic   {K:3594} 1/11/2005
I just adore this so much - I only have one criticism - I wish it was posted larger so I could see it better!!

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 1/11/2005
I posted it at the maximum size usefilm allowes it (800 pixel in either height or width).

Del Metheny   {K:25617} 1/11/2005
Just look at those eyes, wanting to share. Very sweet. Del.

Amanda Radovic   {K:3594} 1/11/2005
You have - for some very strange reason when I clicked on the thumbnail last night it came up at about 300 pixels - weird cos now it has come up full size!

Andreas Hering   {K:1785} 1/12/2005
nix zu meckern ... ist doch gut ! technisch und auch sonst . that the hand is out of the focus is ok. the importand thing here is the face and this wonderful eyes.

Dominikus BW   {K:500} 1/23/2005
wonderful angle...
wonderful pic...

Terry S.   {K:3083} 4/4/2005
Beautiful shot - I like the perspective of this a lot. I agree with you regarding the dof, I think the forehand in sharp focus would have been a distraction from her sweet expression.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/4/2005
Thanks a lot Terry. Yes it is all about her expression. This is one of my favorites of my daughter so I'm really glad you like it.

ricardo longhi-frantz   {K:9666} 11/26/2005
