Well this one is just splendid David - a light filled shot, and the blackness of the boots makes it outstanding. I think I like it the best of all your work so far.

Tiffany Hix   {K:5012} 1/6/2005
Great tones and softness. I love that she is wearing your shoes! It's such a great childhood moment that every parent can relate to! Great job!

hi David, I saw your question re soft negs, in this case whatever you did was the right thing given this harsh lighting situation, though it is probably better to avoid such contrast in the first instance

apart from contrast issues, most of this image is actually bright white which adds no information to the main subject

window light is the best light for most images, especially portraits, however you are actually on the wrong side of the house, on the other side you will get much better/more diffused light, as you actually want reflected light coming through the window, not direct/harsh sunlight, or if this window/door is your only viable option, hang a bed sheet to diffuse the light

i think i'd crop this in even more... a darling moment captured... see below

Interesting crop. I like it. I think for now I enjoy the air the MF gives me and just let the photos breath :) After framing photos and film to a wide ratio for 25 years it is kind of new to have a square image ratio. With MF I often just frame too wide and think about the actual crop later.

Hi Ray, thanks for your thoughts. Yep the whole image is overexposed and almost washed out. There was no other way to get the exposure right on her. Of course there is plenty of definition in the bright parts in the negative, but I pushed it up. The effect is that everything around her becomes bright loosing definition, so automatically the focus is all on her. Usually the eyes go to the bright part so you want a brighter subject than background, but if the whole background is white the effect also works the other way around.

Actually the biggest contrast are the black shoes. Since they get a lot of attention, I made sure they still have plenty of definition. After all they are the key thing in this photo.

So from that point of view I'm very happy with the tones. They work just fine for me.

That said I agree, while the harsh light works ok here, it is way too brutal for many other situations.

The problem in our house is there are way too many white walls and carpet. It creates way too much omnidirectional ambient light. I think that was one of the reasons why I first thought my negatives were flat. If I'm lucky I get a 2 stop contrast between light and ambient. Way too little for an interesting light.

You have some good shots here David? but ?Papa Schuhe? is as charming a baby shot as I?ve seen. Pictures that deliver what this one delivers are NEVER about technical excellence, although one continues to strive for the desired balance. Sometimes the Wow I get from technical perfection actually competes with the feeling I gets from the main issue ? the delight in this picture is the lovely baby putting on a show to the viewer ? that?s the story!
The ?excessive? light is not really excessive and bothers me not.

Thank you very much for commenting on a couple of my pictures.
As for your question about the halo surrounding the boys on my ?Beach Bums??
- did it by lassoing outside the figures, feathering the selection generously, to graduate the transition between light and dark, and inversing and burning a bit outside the selection. There are other ways of doing it but I think this is what happened here.

Best regards? and again, ?Papa Schuhe?s? a winner.

How adorable is this? Love the look she is giving the 'viewer'. She seems to be having such fun in daddy's shoes.

Cheryl Ogle   {K:24494} 1/15/2005
She's walking in your shoes - I love this stage. Very nice use of natural light.

Adorable shot - your comment made me laugh out loud.

David Hofmann   {K:23763} 4/4/2005
Thanks Terry! It was one of those moments where she knew she was doing something silly and she looked at me to see what my reaction would be. She tried to walk in both shoes, but it saw too heavy for her, but she also knew she had to move on so she decided to just keep that one shoe. It was really funny.

Paul T. Yung   {K:984} 4/6/2005
Great capture of a very funny moment.
