Steve, this is a really cool shot. Have you tried cropping in to just the ducks head, hightlight the yellow, and add some contrast and brightness. I did as an experiement and it's great!

Sorry for the delay in replying! I had to wait for my bird book to arrive from Amazon, so I didn't get it wrong...

This is a tufted duck. They are pretty common over here in the UK, not sure about the US. Thanks for looking!
