About Subject background: The sun is about to go down near the United Nations building. Mister Cool in front walks by, and the chimney in the back spits out red smoke.

PS concept: Layer stuff, mild crop. no change on the red smoke btw (this is natural and surreal as well).

as always: honest feedback highly appreciated.

wow Thilo, pretty spectacular--con ed plant, huh--hey I work just down the block.
isn't that "red" smoke just refracted sunlight?

I feel here a very dramatic atmosphere... The sunset, cluds and the chimney with the red smoke create this,,, Mister cool seems to be walking away from the dramatism... Excellent composition... Very nice colors...

Cheers,

MaLuisa

James Cowhey   {K:374} 1/29/2005
Great composition, color and mood. Coincidentally, just yesterday on my drive to work I was noticing the steam and smoke from the various plants and thinking about a photo essay. This time of year because of the cold weather it rises almost vertically on calm days.

thanks

Maria Luisa Vial   {K:36017} 1/29/2005
WOW!!! Never thought my comment was to be in the front page... Great it is with you... Congratulations my friend!!!!!! I am very happy for both... :O)

Raphael Günther   {K:586} 1/31/2005
It's a great picture but i don't like manipulations.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 1/31/2005
Hi Raphael,

thanks for the feedback.

please explain the term "manipulation". As to my knowledge of this term, there is no manipulation in this picture.

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 1/31/2005
Ein sehr affiger Vorschlag =)

Raphael Günther   {K:586} 1/31/2005
I can see a border around the chimneys.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 1/31/2005
Hi Raphael,

okay, I see your point. I made the picture upload-ready at home and wanted to upload the picture at work. There I found out that my monitor here shows some lighting anomalies in the chimney area. Therefore I decided to put a gray scale filled adjustment layer (blending mode) on the picture and mask out the chimneys (obviously in a hurry). You may call that manipulation, but at least my understanding of that term is different. =) I had to question a lot of pictures of my UF friends if this definition of manipulation would be a general one.

A manipulation for me includes e.g. the replacement or erasure of objects. This is not done here.

thanks for your comment.

Vanessa Moura   {K:2} 1/31/2005
Hei, you know? Its all about ISO + sensibility...you are the perfect formula.Awsome!

Dear Vanessa,

thanks a lot for your kind words.

Yamreij Carlos   {K:460} 1/31/2005
Great composition, looks as if the building is on fire and "mr. cool" is walking away from the crie scene. The darkness of the clouds gives it a very dramatic feel.

Kristina Kohut   {K:49990} 1/31/2005
You mean the smoke really had that colour? That's excellent! What a difference light can make..! Even without the colours it would had been a great photo, but now it has that extra that makes it really fantastic!

R. W.   {K:558} 1/31/2005
impressive picture

Erik Neldner   {K:10896} 1/31/2005
Thilo,

Wow! What a capture. Outstanding job on this one. The contrast between the cool foreground and the flame are unreal.
cheers,
erik

Sunset Man   {K:10194} 2/1/2005
Mr. Bayer,

An 'Ecological Metaphor' indeed ... not exactly a place I would like to live nor take a stroll, but the effect is for sure atmospherically profound!

Best of Regards,

Zeev Scharf   {K:24572} 2/11/2005
Hi Thilo, fantastic capture, this reddish smoke going up the sky, clouds formation all superb

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 2/24/2005
another i wanted to get back to...no matter how this was achieved, the end result is "ART",pure and simple...(was referring to Raphael's manipulation comments)..the man alone would have made a splendid composition, but luckily you captured that dramatic background,too...great timing and very good realization,Thilo...regards,gayle (7+)

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 3/4/2005
Dear Gayle,

thanks so much for your constructive and kind critics. really appreciate your valuable support to me!

best wishes,
