About Two landscape format shots (handheld), stitched vertically for more FOV. 1/100 sec f:5.6 and 1/160 sec f:7.1 with ISO 100 @ 10 mm (that is 16 mm equivalent in film terms). RAW files converted to 16 bit/channel TIF with CaptureOne. To get a maximum tonal range, I used the "Film extra shadow" curve for conversion, +5% color sat. Difficult pano job because of perspective distortion, at last I stitched manually with PS and Edit > Free transform, gradient blended layer mask. B&W and Duotone with Convert to B&W pro, three TIFFs blended in PS. I used an Ilford FP4 / Ilford Multigrade setting with a radial blended gradient lyer mask to compensate for blown highlights in the sun area, and a Multigrade 2.8 contrast for the ground. At last, a touch of extra light for the impression of flowing light on the ground with an adjustment layer mask and the brush tool.

excellent

A technical and artistic genius! Master of heavenly skies, an inspiration, a teacher, an asset to UseFilm.com

Astounding. I cannot quite wrap my brain around the detail in your "about," although it's much appreciated. It just tells me how very basic my skills actually are...lol...as I haven't a clue about 3/4 of your techniques. When are you putting together your DVD tutorials and selling them? You certainly have the patience for technical far beyond me. As for the image, it is sensational. My first thought was how fantastic the convergence of the details of land and clouds. The toning is beautiful -- it's somewhat deep gray/purple on my monitor, and works quite well. Do you end up with very high resolution images with all the stitching? Am curious, as with all that you do, it would be nice to blow these up to frame very large. Bravo! (And I'm with Lily on your being a valuable asset :) Antonia

Nice capture. Congrats.

Strange, have to try again with my reply, didn t work.: Thank you all for encouraging comments. Overengeneering is always an issue for me, I tend to work long on a RAW shot since I can start with RAW in different directions and try out effects of filters (here a Red Filter) and dodging / burning until I am happy with the result. I think, overengeneering is the case when tones look stressed or unnatural resp. unaesthetic. Therefore I work on 16bit/channel TIF from beginning to resizing, gives tonal qualities often comparable to film if not overstressed. Toni, I dont think your skills are basic but you work predominantly with selection techniques, and my preferred tool is the layer ans masking technique in PS. Indeed you need patience for such a job, since you have so much interesting options and different versions to try, until you are really happy ;-) Size is indeed a nice side effect of stitching, you get really large files with high resolution. This image is about 11 MP (from two 6 MP imgs, minus 25% overlap, plus some upsizing in the upper sky parts due to perespective correction with PS). Just great for large prints, and a nice substitute for full frame DSLR !

Wow, Carsten - breathtaking and expansive scene! You're vertical pano works beutifully here, and what a subject for it! I love the texture on the ground and in the sky - different in nature, but almost mimicking each other. Wonderful!
p.s. Thanks so much for your kind comments on my work!

Jan Symank   {K:15755} 3/2/2005
Beautiful wide angle perspective and dramatic motion in the sky.
Interesting PS work
Very well done !

Wow -- your description of digital techniques must be a great help to less-experienced digital photographers because the resulting picture looks technically flawless to me. Tonality might be a bit heavy, but I'm kind of prejudiced against filters as a rule. Rgds, Svend

Excellent perspective and composition. I like how everything draws you to the horizon. This really flows perfectly. Perfect image, 7/7

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 3/8/2005
Svend, thanks for your respectful comment. I know you work with medium format and film, and UF is a great site for me to learn from others. Your work is an example of good composition and artistic use of film - I will try to work with more decent colors and tones in the future ;-)

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 3/8/2005
Thank you all for your comments !

Manu     {K:13063} 3/9/2005
For me its the dramatic sky that does it....I would have cropped the foreground a little to accentuate this even more. But its your shot not mine so well done especially the blueness of the image creating a wonderful sense of coldness.

Cheers

Manu
