About She is wearing her mother's clothes and wishes to be just like her....a reminder that we are the models the adults of tomorrow are looking up to.

Technical: converted to monochrome using channel mixer, then to sepiatone with a gradient map using a yellowed browntone, then levels and curves adjustments. The wall hanging was really there next to her -- it's a scroll made by another child. I took advantage of the light coming from a nearby doorway at the end of the hallway.

Beautiful portrait, just lovely. Very beautiful girl also. BUT THIS MUST be an old photography???!!!! Or have you created this old touch in PS?

Jeanette

Antonio Oliveira   {K:550} 2/2/2005
Beautiful.
Congratulations.

Samuel Downs   {K:7290} 2/2/2005
This has a down-home, warm, earthy feel to it (at least for me). I like the inclusion of the printed material - gives it a weathered look and 'past' feel. Just a wonderful photo. Cheers! Sam

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 2/2/2005
Jeanette, thank you. This was taken very recently, and the only PS work was to convert it to monochrome using channel mixer, and my usual levels and curves tweaking. The light was coming from a nearby doorway. She is dressed up in vintage clothing belonging to her mother, which ads to the effect.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 2/2/2005
...and the sepia was created using a brownish/yellowish gradient map

Carlos     {K:12969} 2/2/2005
love it Antonia - excellent work

karen clarke   {K:18847} 2/2/2005
A wonderful example of the classic portrait. I love the aging effects you have applied. Little girls grow up so fast, soon the clothes will fit. Excellent work, definitely a fav~

Gertrud Gozner   {K:14222} 2/2/2005
wonderful work!! G.

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 2/2/2005
Toni, you are an artist, very imaginative shot, masterly executed ! I have a large glass negative with my grand-grandparents. In my "former life" as film photographer I made a poster sized print, sepia toned, hangs on the wall in my parents`s house. I love those old prints ! One thing came into my mind: those old lenses and large formats had not very much DOF - so I tried a lens blur filter on your photo (hope you dont mind) and focussed on the eye region with a gradient layer mask, thus blurring the peripheral parts to get this "daguerrotype effect". Thank you for posting this great photo !

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 2/2/2005
Carsten, I love what you've done -- beautiful result. Would you please explain what a lense blur filter is? I use PS's gaussian filter. Also, how do you do a gradient mask? Perhaps you are using tools I am familier with, but I want to nail down more precisely what you did, so I can try it. And when you referred to those old lenses and large formats didn't have very good DOF, you were teasing, right? Sorry if my questions seem a tad dense, just want to clarify. It pleases me to no end that you've taken this much time on this photo, and I hope you don't mind my asking for more -- the price you pay for your genius...lol.

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 2/2/2005
...Carsten, please cancel the portion of my question regarding your teasing about the old lenses and DOF... I had things reversed for a moment in my thinking... I get it now...lol

Roberto Carli   {K:13689} 2/2/2005
This is a very old photo.....i remember someone of my grandfather........really great effect, well done Toni!!!!!!

Cheryl Ogle   {K:24494} 2/2/2005
Oh, how adorable - to be honest, I thought it was a photo you retouched by the look of the thumbnail. It just looked like an OLD photo - something in one of the generations photo album. Great job!

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 2/2/2005
Toni, in PS 8 (CS) the lens blur filter is a new feature, to simulate the "bokeh" of photographic lenses: Filter > Blur > Lens Blur. Play with the different sliders, quite sophisticated tool. Your image as background layer, I made a new layer with a copy of this image: right click in the layers palette on the word Background > Duplicate (or draw the layer image onto the "Create a new Layer" button). On the top layer, I performed the lens blur filter action. Add a layer mask: Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All. Nothing changed ... But now: set the foreground color to black, chose the gradient tool, click on the "radial gradient" button, and draw from the center to an edge. Voila, the underlying layer (sharp eye region) is unmasked, in a radial blended transition. Thats what I mean with a gradient mask. Regarding old lenses: perhaps a slight vignetting could make the "old touch" even better, what do you think ?

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30030} 2/2/2005
Thanks again Carsten. Your last explanation was crystal clear...and I'm excited to go apply it. Never noticed the new feature in CS..I'll check it out...I have straight Photoshop CS is that not the same as Photoshop 8 CS? If not, I need to go get the upgrade. I kept hearing Photoshop 8 this and that and I've been assuming that's what I have, but mine doesn't say "8." As for the vignette, yes, that would be nice. By the way...you're HIRED!!! Antonia

Marcio Janousek   {K:18913} 2/3/2005

A fine compliment coming from your Marcio..thank you! (BTW, does it show up in your favorites? Just concerned because you are the second one to say you've placed it where nothing registered after the comment). Antonia

Wonderful Toni. I love the effect making this look very old. Was this done at the school during that project?

:) Margaret, I love when you love my work. Thanks. Antonia

Dirck DuFlon   {K:35779} 2/6/2005
Excellent, Antonia! The toning and grain in this photo go perfectly with the clothing and jewelry, the ragged poster on the wall and the lighting for a very convincing period feel!
Were this a more 'straighforward' portrait, I'd say the bright edge of her forehead and cheek are a little blown-out, but for the old-timey look, it works! Great job!

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 2/8/2005
