About The sun was so bright this late afternoon that this Cardinal really stood out in this tree against the blue sky. I had gone down to try and find an owl which I did and will post below since it came out a bit dark.

Here is the owl, it had just caught a rat.

That is one RED bird. The sky color is awesome. Good details on the tree.

Lovely colour contrasts and details in his photo Alison. I think I may well have cropped in a bit though to make the bird more of a feature.
As for the Owl, that looks great... a step to the right may have allowed you to get it out from behind the branch and I'm sure that a kittle work in PS would lighten up superbly. Again a closer crop would probablly help too.

Well done though.

Alastair

And stand out he does! I love the quality of the light in the late afternoon - it really brings out some beautiful golds in the tree bark and richens the red in the cardinal. This is a great example of breaking the 'rule of thirds' and going with a dead-center composition to really showcase the bright little bird!

I see why you wanted to go back and get a shot of this owl - he looks big! The dark exposure is because of the tricky lighting - your camera's meter is trying to average the bright and dark areas, and the end result can be that neither comes out just right. You'd have to go with the manual setting on the camera and over-expose, or you could also try setting your 'exposure compensation' (I think it's called EV in the menu) and set it to +2 or +3 for this shot. Or as he said, you could send it to Armando - but remember, you might end up with an owl on Mars or something! :)

Alastair, unfortunately I couldn't go to the right to get a better shot, lots of trees. I tried to get around to the other side and he flew off. I'll try again one afternoon. Alison

I'll look for the setting Dirck, this oicture had to be taken quickly so just shot what I could and will go back some late afternoon and try again. Alison

Hahahaaaha!! you know me very good my dear friend

I think in some ways this is better than if you had been closer because the branches form such a nice pattern. That spot of red is just as piercing as his song in the cold winter air. Beautiful job.

Beautiful lighting in the Cardinal shot, Alison! I like your Owl, too! I guess you were being cautious and getting the shot before it was spooked!
Dave.
