With red-gold star some other story...
Red star - USSR -> Russia...
But Kiev - it's Ukraine, and we have some troubles in politics between Ukraine-Russia. And for non-political locomotive - gold colour. Like red, but no one assosiations with USSR-Russia ;-)

What a lovely old steam locomotive Vlad... and an excellent iamge of it. Did you try this in black and white (or sepia)? I just tried it in B&W and it looks great! Nice detail and contrasts here and the history is very interesting....

When I am posting that card - I think about old-photo (yellow colours with a lot of black lines), may be than I forgot about b-w ;-)

It's one thing for the loco to be 'pensioned off' - I just hope it's not going to be broken up, as so many were here not so very many years ago.
