About First time experimenting with this type of photography. I learned real fast that you have to ignore the light meter and go with your own judgement. Underexposed to capture the detail in the moon. This capture was intended to be kept to use in Photoshop in another project much later on. Any critiques and comments are always welcome.
I used a 2x converter with the lens mentioned, at a focal length of 570mm.

Great detail, Michael. ISO 100? I've never attempted this myself, but I like the result of your "experiment". Very nice.

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 2/23/2005
Tim,
Yes, I used an ISO of 100. I experimented with the other settings as well, but for me this seems to have turned out the best. Higher ISO settings made the subject very grainy. Thank you for your kind comment.
Michael.

Taras R. Hnatyshyn   {K:3794} 2/24/2005
Michael,

Nice exposure and excellent contrast. You nailed the focus on this one. The light meter only works if the moon completely covers the sensor, otherwise you are metering the black/blue of the sky, which will overexpose the moon. The moon is a sun lit object, so some of the rules of thumb for daylight apply.

Taras,
I am still learning different techniques within photography. Night photography is my favorite because of the long exposures. On this one, I wanted to get all the detail that I could, so I used a faster shutter speed and a little higher aperture to try to achieve the best exposure. I thought that this turned out well. I am only glad that I was not using film, I'd be broke by now if I were.
Thank you very much for commenting on this image.
Best wishes,
Michael

The next full moon is on Friday, March 25th. This was an experiment for me too, and was happy with the results. Try this web site, this was very educational for me, http://www.thenocturnes.com/resources.html. This site is for night photography.
Thank you for your kind comment.

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 3/8/2005
Astounding what you can show with a 300 mm lens + TC ! You must have a sturdy tripod... And yes, digital has an edge over film when it comes to difficult exposures.

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/8/2005
The camera was mounted on a Bogon tripod. I have a Canon F-1 film camera that I still use, but the digital is my preference right now. I am still learning photography, and it is alot cheaper to practice with my Canon Rebel 300D vs buying film.
Thank you very much for your kind comments. I find your portfolio very impressive! I only hope that I can get as good as you are in due time.

thanks again,
Mike

A very good solar capture.

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 3/15/2005
Hi Mike,
I had no idea you could get this type of detail of the moon with 300mm and 2x converter. Great shot.
Andre

Alastair Bell   {K:29571} 3/15/2005
One of the best moon photos I've seen! Love the details on the surface (Tycho Brae in particular is very impressive). Perfect exposure ( you do need to underexpose quite a bit on these shots or use spot metering). Well done Michael!

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/16/2005
Gregory,
Thank you for your kind comment.

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/16/2005
Andre,
This was an experiment, one which I am very happy with the results. Backing off the focal length just a little really improved the sharpness of the image. Thank you for commenting.

Alastair,

Thank you very much for your kind comment. I've learned a lot from practicing this shoot.

thanks,
Mike

You have the exposure spot on with this image Michael. It is all too easy to overexpose while taking the moon, especially when photographing the full moon. But your picture shows so much detail which could have all to easily have been lost.
Congratulations on a prize winning image and thank you for your comment on my last picture.
Regards

Nidge.

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/18/2005
Nigel,
Thank you for your kind comment. I must say, I have learned alot while taking this photo.

Thanks again, Mike

Cheers Guido

Hi,Michael
must try following trick.
find a black plastic tube that is a bit wider in diameter than your lens.About 15 to 30cm long.
Shoot though the pipe and you will gain contrast and maybe sharpness.
Cheers
Guido.

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/20/2005
Will definately try it, thanks for the idea.

Amazing moon detail at 570mm. I tried on the 25th with my 70-200mm with 2x converter but had little success. My hat's off to you. I'll try again with underexposing the next clear night.

Jimmy

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 3/28/2005
Jimmy,
This was a lot of fun to shoot. I tripoded this shot and played with the camera settings in manual mode. This one seemed to work out the best.
Thanks for the compliment, and good luck.

This is our first, but hopefully not last meeting on the pages of "Usefilm", Mr. Mellen. I looked through your portfolio and had difficulty to select a photo to comment on, all your photos are good. Finally I settled on this one becuaue it is relatively simple and simplicity I've been told more than once is one of the sectrets of beauty in art.
Thank you for you kind words about my "Maya's ear." The clip on it might whisper sectrsts in her ear by day, but at night i turns into the ogre that climbs one of the buildings in my "Moonlight over Ramat Gan."

Mark Biri   {K:117} 4/2/2005
Michael - this shot is really great - posted a shot of this full moon myself, but I like the detail in yours. Where'd you find a 2x converter for the 75-300mm?

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 4/2/2005
Mark,
I purchased a Quantaray 2x converter for my Canon 300D last year and it works with all of my EF lenses. It does ok on some types of photography, as long as the lens is not racked all the way out. I bought it at Ritz Camera in Jacksonville, FL.
This image was taken while mounted on a tripod, and it took me many shots before getting this one. Thank you very much for commenting on this image.

excellent...

Michael Mellen   {K:7935} 4/12/2005
Rafael,
Thank you for your kind comment. I don't know why the comments had posted late. This one is probably one of my favorites because of the exposure and detail I was able to pull out. I still have lots to learn about photography.
Thanks again,
Mike

Peter Carucci   {K:1660} 6/11/2005
Gorgeous lunar shot and amazing detail for this lens. I've tried a few lunar shots myself - definitely manual exposure is the way to go. The IS feature in the Canon lenses can actually produce this kind of detail in a hand-held shot if you're careful enough. Great job on this!
