It went through a lot of tweaking in PS to get the contrast fixed. I shot this in raw format,, converted it to 16 bit to have more latitude in dynamic. here is the original.

David, you did a phenomenal job in PS with this!! By any chance, did you use the Shadows/Highlight adjustment tools? This really wound up amazing, thanks for including the original. Definately deserving of enlargement/framing! A WORK OF ART!!
Congrats! Jan

Thanks Jan. I haven't tried to highligh/shadow thing in PS yet. I used the curve editor and layer masks to treat the bright and dark half individually. Then some painting to make it even more seamless. Maya got a separate contrast adjustment to get an interesting light on her. She was pretty dull in the original.
But all the technical stuff aside. I like this photo very much since it shows Maya really in her element. She loves those kind of games.

David...you took the same approach I would have. I've explored the shadow/highlight thing briefly, but am going to need to read up on it before I feel comfortable using it.
I truly believe that this shot is something she's going to want framed and hanging in her home as an adult. Just a perfect capture of "who" this child is...in living color!!
Congrats again. Jan

Very nice shot David. You did a great job in PS with the color balance. Very vibrant. I also shoot in raw format and get the same result as you have below. As with slides of negatives, color balancing is always needed. Thanks for your nice comment and for not calling my image "cheesy" which I hope is not my style. Regards, Andree

Hi Klifton, thanks very much. You don't really see anything in the original, but I just wanted to give no one a reason to object so I cloned the little lid to cover it. I was hoping it would go unnoticed :)
Personally I have no problem with that and think that subject is way oversensitive in some societies but that is a whole differt subject.

well if she does become an artist we'll KNOW where she got it from. You are so wonderful with your art in the medium of photography! I love this image and I love it even MORE when I see the original and can appreciate how far it came. This belongs on your wall as a 16x20 at least! I love all the paint cups strewn about and the one in her lap is just adorable! Did she paint her body all herself or did she have some help? ;) Just an adorable image. You will treasure this for a long time and I can see it being passed on to HER children.

Hi Sara,
thanks so much. Yes this one is or will becomes eventually a big photo for her later. My wife is an artist, too (drawing & painting) so I guess she has a little bit of both of us. She painted herself I didn't help her. Her brother did help a little, though. :) She totally dives into it once she gets started. The little lid in her lap is PS work to make sure no one would object. I took many more photos that Sunday but since both were running around naked I guess it is not a good idea to upload them here :) thanks again for taking the time to look and comment.

I really wanted to get this shot so I spent some time in PS to get it right. But funny enough the final result is way more realistic in a way that I remember the scene. The eye adapts to thos contrasts and we tend to almost not see the light/shadow edge at all. I try to get the photos to look how I see them in my head.

Another funny image. Great work to remove the mixed lighting of the original. It looks like the highlights to her right are blown, but it's still a very effective image. You might consider re-processing the image in your RAW converter to capture those highlights, and then compositing those two images.

thanks James, it was a shot that I knew would require some work the moment I shot it. I actually did start with thr raw version. I processed it even further and got rid of the difference in brightness completely, but didn't like it that much. It felt too flat. The colors are actually poor in the highlights on the left (even with a second lower exposed version from the raw file) When I brought them down the loss became visible so I kept the brightness there. I think I should have taken a second shot with a lower exposure and use that for the left side only.
On landscapes from a tripod I often do exposure bracketing to capture the full dynamic range. Handheld shots require a lot more re-aligning so I end up never doing it.
thanks for taking a look at my portfolio and taking the time to comment on so many photos. I really appreciate the honest input. As much as I'm happy to heard postive comments I'm als very interested in hearing different point of views and ideas.
