It was mostly the owl's idea... I thought it was going to fly to another perch and almost in front of me, it dropped like a stone, plunged through knee deep snow and came up with a mouse or vole... I missed the best part of the action trying for this shot.

Bob, I understand these guys can and will knock you on your a$$ if you tick em off. I don't know if it was last month's or maybe a couple of months ago but National Geographic did a story on these birds. I'm sure you would love it. Your photos are equal in every scense.

These are large owls but they are mostly feathers... they range from 700 to 1700 grams (less than 4 lbs), so although they might attack with claws and beak, they're a little shy in kinetic energy... not wise to be in their way all the same.
For the most part, the gg owls are almost completely oblivious to human presence and I believe it is possible to touch them as they sit on a perch... I could certainly get within arm's length of many that I was photographing.

How lucky you are to have such an opertunity and a willing subject.
Maybe the Nat Geo article was about another breed but It did have the same round face bone. The owl in the article used it face to dive and break through snow and ice to get to mice and other small critters. They said the owl would attack humans that got to close to their nest. was said to feel a bit like getting hit with a baseball bat.
At any rate, I have really enjoyed these photos. I hope there are more to come...
