About Unmerciful, the urban jungle reflect the laws of nature. The pitiful soles wandering aimlessly in the midst of the shadows are oblivious of the world around them. The chaotic clutter of the life below goes unnoticed to the occupants of the glass and steel structures above. Where the foliage is represented by the tentacles of their power and wealth, the average man is the prey of their greed; predators lurking from above.

Actual camera settings:
ISO Sensitivity: 200 ASA
Focal length: 17mm
Aperture: f/8
Shutterspeed: 1/250'
Exposure Comp: -1/3 EV

Photoshop: Masking and partial tonal tweaks.

Your comments are, as always, very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Hugo

Yay! Da man is back.. And he continues where he left of..
Very nice lines pointing at a sunny sky. It reminds me of those photos one sometimes sees from forests, looking up to the sky like here.. The urban jungle avant lettre.
Good to see you're back..

Paolo De Maio   {K:34166} 4/8/2005
Your comment in "About" told us all that you could figure out.....

this project is another dimonstration of your masterpieces of your skills.
as usual I thank you in sharing your techniques and your professionalism.

Welcome back,Hugo!...i would call this one,"Commercial Vandalism"..as Joni Mitchell once sang,"Pave paradise and put up a parking lot"..but alas, wrecking the past is the price of progress, right? ;> ..exposure and contrast level seem spot on and perspective is positively powerful..regards,gayle

Sony Kusumo   {K:7052} 4/8/2005
Gosh Hugo! THis one gives me the, err, what's that feeling, when you feel like you're falling.......
A very good one!
Good composition of the colorful banner and the stand-tall building and the bright sky. Really-really gives me the vertigo...
So Dramatic

Lex Bronkhorst   {K:14152} 4/8/2005
When you look up it looks like the whole city is made out of mirrors! Reflections of flags on the left, buildings on the right, really amazing shot, again. The clouds in this picture are great, they break the otherwise bit boring sky. Amazing colours, but i still don't know what to think of the sign 'cafe' yet! If the photo was taken 2steps forward it would not get on the picture, but than you also missed the flags, so i think it is for the best!
greets, Lex

Manu     {K:13063} 4/8/2005
Fantastic composition as always Hugo...including the light. You paint a very dark and bleak portrait in your about. Some of us and I include you in this, are fully aware and excited about our surroundings, even in the city. Anyway, thats enough of that...great to see your back from your break and look forwards to reading from you soon.

Cheers for now

Manu

Chris Spracklen   {K:32552} 4/8/2005
Welcome back, Hugo, with a typically high quality image and thought-provoking 'about'.
It's good to see another fine axample of your work!
Best regards, Chris

Hugo
Your images present a perfect world!!!
Where every frame in your film or memory card is so perfectly composed!
you capture ordinary moments in everyday life and turn them into magic!
To think of the high powerful companys as predators looking for prey!
Talk about creative imagination! ;)
Suddenly it all starts to make sense?the politics the commercial world!
The tight crop and the strong diagonal lines leading the eyes across the frame into the bright well exposed cloudy sky looking for hope and refuge from the injustice of the world
The excellent focusing endured a maximum depth of filed along with the aperture and the use of wide angel lens!
Welcome back hugo :)

Hi Hugo,

nice to see u back again! I've checked several times your portfolio to see if u were on again lately. In any case, this is another great add to the serie and I guess that masking has played an important role here in order to get such a wonderful contrast both in highlights and shadows. Excellent work my friend, as usual. Hope to see more and more from u soon!

Arnoldas Jurgaitis   {K:-4} 4/8/2005

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17525} 4/8/2005
The strong angles are both amazing and form a powerful element in this image. I like how there is so much detail to look at, but the image holds together without being confusing. Perhaps it is the strong graphic element that helps accomplish this.

It is wonderful seeing you again. You've been missed around here!

Paul Lara   {K:78552} 4/8/2005
Beautiful photo and wonderful insight, Hugo.

Paul's Photos   {K:34954} 4/8/2005
love the perspective and angle... also the colors are nice.. I like how the blue sky is reflected in the glass skycraper.. Walking around buildings like these can definitely make you feel small.. nicely seen and captured.. good work

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 4/8/2005
Quite the proclamation, Hugo :-) The image supports it but there is a conflict in it that either contradicts or supports it too, all depending on your state of mind... I am thinking of the gray and lifeless sign in the shadowed foreground contrasted with the bright blue sky and those tall brilliantly lit skyscrapers. I think this perspective can support associations of both hope and opression and the choice is basically the viewer's. The question is how do you as a photographer bias that impression? My conclusion is that your text is the most powerful tool in that regard since the image is very ambivalent as I read it.

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/8/2005
Hi Stefan, you're quite right about the contradiction between the about and the image. I don't think the text supports it entirely, but in respect to the other two images and their respective description, things might fall into place. Then again, another part of this series is exactly what you refer to; the conflict between the photo and the underlying text; on one hand the text paints a grim image of something that really fascinates me. I think, that my bias in this issue is subsidary to what other people see and feel when they look at the combination image - text, though. Like you say, I'd like to leave that choice to the viewer.

I know I'm circumventing the issue. What I really tried to express with these three images is the inherent feeling of insecurity / lack of self confidence which is the flip side, but always accompanies every major decision: "Am I doing the right thing, and what if.....?"

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugoooooooooo!!! So nice to hear from you again/see you posting! Welcome back!

Your "About" (the first paragraph, that is) deserves an award, and so does the shot! Superb angle & reflections, beautiful sky! I really feel small looking at this sight ...

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 4/8/2005
excellent about and classical angle of view

David Hofmann   {K:23830} 4/8/2005

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30027} 4/8/2005
Hugo, having worked in buildings like this for so many years of my life (ages 20 - 48), your words have much meaning for me. Many hard moments living that life, but many easy ones too (after all, we're not exactly "toiling in the fields"). There are no windows, and there is a feeling of being trapped. I used to envy the ones who got to go to outside meetings and travel to other cities, but then when I did that I found another form of torture was to be had (airports and taxi's and flitting in and out of traffic and buildings just the same -- just in other places). Nonetheless, I still saw their beauty as I looked up at them during lunch breaks or on the way to and from work. And I pondered those things about which you write. You've captured it so well here, just like a chord in a musical refrain. Bravo! Antonia

Antonia BauerleinSehnert   {K:30027} 4/8/2005
p.s. By "no windows" I mean, none that open.

Francesco Martini   {K:12304} 4/8/2005
beautiful image..excellent prospective!!!!

Lee Harris   {K:14694} 4/8/2005
Hey Hugo good to see you.

Nice city shot here, hope you didn't get a neck ache checking theses out.
Excellent detail and the exposure is perfect.

Welcome back! A very fine image, great angle and composition.

Michael Kanemoto   {K:22103} 4/8/2005
ditto to above comments

Kees and Carolyn    {K:15193} 4/8/2005
Despite what this represents, it's a beautiful photo! I love the clouds and colors reflected in the one building. This makes me somewhat dizzy. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I can only imagine what it must be like to actually be there, the spot where you took this photo. Excellent shot! Welcome back!!

Judi Liosatos   {K:34029} 4/8/2005
Hugo....I like the image and the reflection...but I don't want to speak out of turn or upset you. I feel it is missing something. You normally have images with a hidden emotion in it. I don't feel it with this one. Something is bothering you....are you okay?

Judi

Kevin Christensen   {K:3891} 4/9/2005
Great use of line to make those buildings reach toward heaven! I very much like the feel and mood of those metal mountains!

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47543} 4/9/2005
Only artistic eye and pro arrangement can catch and out put this composition, all in one, what I like is the precise angle shot to capture the perspective lines all the way till the sky, reflection adds an extra touch to the wonderful architecture composition. Long time absence hope every thing all right with you and your family, am a slow visiting Uf too, but always keeping in touch with the works of my friends, a busy though ,nice to see you back, regards. Saeed

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Thanks, Elisa! It feels awesome to be back too! It's been way too busy recently, but luckily, it seems things have quieted down a bit, at least for the next few weeks....:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Hi Antonia, I fully relate to what you describe. I've been in and out of airports too regularly the last few months. As Stefan pointed out, there's a conflict between the nature of the photos in this series and the description. The conflict is one of awe and rebellion. I find these big cities inspiring, fascinating and beautiful on one hand, but oppressive, overwhelming and ridden of personality. That's what I tried to express with this series. It's good to be back...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Hi Miguel, Thanks for your comment.... I've been really busy lately, but luckily things have calmed down a bit for at least a few weeks.... I really missed UF, and it sure is good to be back!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Hi Judi, Everything is fine with me, I've been really busy lately, but don't worry. I tried to capture this HK city view (as always) the way I experienced it. The lack of hidden emotion is because of the conflict between the cold, emotionless city, which I find on one hand fascinating and inspiring, but on the other hand cold, ridden of personality and oppressive. Did you read my description? It tries to explain the hidden emotion in this series...

Next series will be completely different again, and I'll post a similar series of NYC soon, which provides an entirely different view.

Thanks for your concern and comment, Very much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
PS: I admire your perceptiveness! I do see your point, there's no hidden emotion here, but that was intentional....

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Hi Saeed, thanks for your comment, it's good to hear from you and it's also very nice to be back again.... Hope to have more time on my hands for the next few weeks. The past months were awfully busy...:)

Take care,

Cheers,

Hugo

Randy Lorance   {K:24958} 4/9/2005
Hello Hugo, it is nice to see you back. An interesting series, this last one starts to bring us down, to as you say, the shadows. Your words do clearly describe the almost two seperate worlds that exist. Those below that occasionally as you have done, look upward for brief moments, and those elevated as they are, peering down at the 'ants'(worker ants).
I cannot help but think of the WTC Towers when I read the last line that you wrote above and in the previous SkyII, 'the minute instant' that will bring about their eventual downfall.
Very much look foward to the NYC series. Take care

Randy

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 4/9/2005
An intriguing picture (with your text). Technically, spot-on exposure and artistic use of camera position and perspective. Excellent !

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/9/2005
Hi Randy, thanks for your indepth comment and analysis. The last line and the reference to the WTC is unintentional, but maybe a subconcious choice of words... Having only seen ground zero recently, I see the relation. The NYC series will be up in a few weekts, but if you're interested, it's already on display on my site.

Cheers,

Hugo

Judi Liosatos   {K:34029} 4/9/2005
Thanks Hugo. I understand where you are coming from. But in the meantime if you need any help....just yell. I will hear you from over there.

Judi

HI hugo ,how nice to ear from you my dear friend
Extraordinary capture here, the reflections and composition are superb
7++++++
Many thanks for commenting "Soft landing"
I loked at the original shot at those litle black and white triangles, and it seems to be another bird approaching, therefore I left it there
My best regards

Lori Stitt   {K:74437} 4/9/2005
Yes, greedy predators are always lurking sadly...

Hi Hugo,

Glad to see you back, I've wondered how you were and figured you've been busy caught up in 'life'!
And I've been wondering if there would be a 3rd 'glass jungle' picture.

I like this one, maybe the strongest of them all. There really is a feeling of being closed in; crushed so to speak.

I like this composition and the exposure/colors are great!!
Lori :)

Stephen Bowden   {K:64516} 4/9/2005
Fabulous perspective Hugo, the level of detail just goes on and on. Even at the top of the sky scraper the colours are strong and the edges sharp.

Good to see you back my friend :-)

Best wishes,
Steve

Ursula Luschnig   {K:21809} 4/9/2005
Hi Hugo, nice to see you and your fabulous pictures back! This is a breathtaking perspective and angle... a spectacular comeback.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Hi Hugo,

I really like the clarity here and the perfect exposure balance between the sky, the reflective towers and the signs. the flag holders look like trumpets here. great perspective...

minor nitpicks include the frame (personally, I don't like the color too much... maybe a bold black one would fit the subject better) and the general "way up". I mean, there is a lot of symmetry here (which I like), but the flag holders connect the left and the right side so that some tension is lost (a gap between the more traditional left and the more future right may enhance the message).

anyway, a fine work from you. good to have u back, my friend =)

Thilo

Nuno Murias   {K:5314} 4/11/2005
we miss you HUGO welcome back... great picture.

Rashed Abdulla   {K:153650} 4/11/2005
My friend Hugo,i can not find the right word to express my feelings about this image,a great angle and beautiful composition, colors and the timing is perfect, all of the 7's of the world would not be enough for such an image, great job, very best regards.

said elmobasher   {K:861} 4/12/2005
Very intersting prespective .

Tim  Schumm   {K:26939} 4/12/2005
I am not big on mans edifices but your composition is very striking and engaging. I will make an exception in this instance. you made them beautiful.

Carlheinz Bayer   {K:14220} 4/12/2005
Smart comp and angle! GREAT!!!
CB

Fadel J   {K:13587} 4/14/2005
Fantastic angle and great eye Hugo, this kind of scene is very familier but I'm sure that if I'm downtown I would never be able to come up with such a powerful composition!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/15/2005
Hi Fadel, I find that hard to believe....:) You're always managing to complete your work with a very well balanced composition. The style might differ, and so might the shot, but I have no doubt, that it will be powerful.... Thanks for the compliment!

Cheers,

Hugo

Emgy Massidda   {K:60169} 4/15/2005
From the aesthetic point of view, I like image 1 most of all but this one fascinates me for the various details, which make the image a little messy but at the same time interesting. I like this series cause I am fond of beautiful buildings. Modern architecture in extravagant futuristic style always fascinates me. The diagonal composition and the perspective characterizing this series of your is a favorite things for many photographers and never stops amazing me.
Beautiful natural colours, sharp and clear.
Well done again, Hugo
Hugs - Emgy
