About Subject background: I'm muddling through my old archives and cleaning up the old ones ;-) I stumbled over this postcard scene and worked on a more weird version. Hope you like the outcome. A similar scene can be found here

PC concept: some layer stuff (high pass, adjustment layers for sky and foreground, channel mixer for the final bold look)

Honest feedback highly appreciated

Hi Thilo -

I would love to take up the challenge for some negative 'honest' feedback - but i can't really find anything to mention. I think the effects you have used really work wll with this shot.

This shot 'feels' like a painting - but doesn't look like one - if you understand what I mean.

Great shot - I love Venice anyway - but this really does justice to some of its beauty - well done.

Steve

oh yes postcard scene you are right and I like the mood you obtain here, very well done

Louise Vessey   {K:13850} 4/10/2005
Honest feedback is that this is wonderful! Light, sky, composition, all wonderful. I wonder about cropping it on the right a bit tho to keep it more simple?? It's lovely either way. I love the final almost surreal sundown look. Like a painting more than a postcard.

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Dear Roby,

great to hear from you and thanks a lot for the very kind words. I sincerely hope to see some new stuff from you!

best wishes,

Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Hi Peter,

thanks for the feedback. I made a "normal" version as well but opted to bring the weird stuff =)

take care,

Thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Hi Steve,

honest feedback is great, either negative or positive ;-)

you mentioned a lot of things that are important to me... so thanks a lot for the in-depth feedback.

best wishes,

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Dear Louise,

I already cropped a tad on the right ;-)

anyway, thanks a lot for the kind and constructive words. I really appreciate that.

take care,

thilo

Gertrud Gozner   {K:14222} 4/10/2005
beautiful... it looks like a hand-colored postcard...
congrats. G

Roland Lacson   {K:12214} 4/10/2005
Very nice post card like shot Thilo, also the time captured (Golden Light). I've always wanted to explore & photograph this city by the water & it's numerous canals. I'm sure this place is loaded with rich street life, nostalgia, still lifes, texture, etc. Anyway well done, cheers.

Giorgio Goretti   {K:15471} 4/10/2005
Hi THilo,
it seems you love so much Venice, and i agree with you (of course).
I think you were able with this shot to catch the magical essence of Venice, and yes, i'am agree with Louise, it's looks more "paint" than postcard.
No IR layer here? ;-))
cheers
Giorgio

Maria José Barres   {K:11276} 4/10/2005
Great work in the satured colors... looks an oil picture from S.XV!
Beautiful.
Greetings.

Hi Thilo! Bold ... definitely, and a bit unreal look. Gorgeous sky; a colourful & well composed scene!

Hugo de Wolf   {K:184670} 4/10/2005
Hi Thilo, Nice postprocessing here; it has the feeling of a x-processed film, but much more clarity and colour depth, so on second thought, I'd go for a faded postcard. Lots of things happening in this photo, making it very lively. Good shot!

Cheers,

Hugo

Andre Denis   {K:55532} 4/10/2005
Thilo,
This works very well. My son was there about a year and a half ago. He is not a serious photographer and the snapshots he brought back are still very nice to look at. But you have created something on a much higher level. The impression I get from this one is that it appears to be not quite photograph and not quite painting. Something in between! Does that make sense? Is this the sort of effect you were going for? The colours are nice and soft and add to the painting effect.
Andre

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Hi Hugo,

first of all: welcome back ;-)

thanks a lot for the recent comments, I really missed them.

As for the x-processing look, yes, this was kind of an intention. I did a "normal" colored version as well but felt that the color contrasts are not hard enough for this special postcard ;-)

take care,

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/10/2005
Hi Andre,
first of all, thanks a lot for the thoughtful words. I indeed tried to create something special.... and it's well observed if you think about something "in between".

take care,

thilo

Walter Scarella   {K:17231} 4/10/2005
Hi Thilo, nice Canal Grande image, excellent compo, beautiful colours and light, I think you take this picture from Rialto bridge! I like also the contrast between clouds and sky. Well done!!! Regards....Walter

Rosario Esposito   {K:9796} 4/10/2005
Mi sembra un dipinto,molto bella.Complimenti

George Black   {K:101978} 4/10/2005
I think this is extraordinarily beautiful. I love it. The "final bold look" does give the whole scene a painterly quality. As to "postcard" views, I've given up worrying about it. Sometimes a cliché is just impossible to resist--and so I don't!

Happy days,
--George

giovanni guido marchi   {K:26011} 4/10/2005
un quadro del "canaletto"....complimenti!!!

Burak Tanriover   {K:16604} 4/10/2005
very well executed, the composition is superb. I think that the clouds add a lot to this picture.
best wishes.

Omar Rifaat   {K:10135} 4/10/2005
This is a lovely shot, Thilo. I am not knowledgeable in PS, but this makes me want to start learning. I like the way the light and colours make the image seem to transcend the everyday mundane world and somehow represent a more universal or deeper state...
Nice work!
Regards,
Omar

Erik Neldner   {K:10896} 4/10/2005
t,
Nice. I agree with the others that it's reminiscent of an old colorized postcard. Cool work man.

excellent Thilo-- very nice treatment

Gayle's Eclectic Photos   {K:91033} 4/11/2005
"Baby i'm amazed at the way you...!"..LOL..capture and create such phenom beauty,Thilo! You must know that i find bold contrast very appealing and the rich colors are just delicious...yum!..the whole glowing image is poetic and passionate which isn't a word i would normally use to describe a scenic, but feel it applies here...to my faves!..regards,gayle (7+)

Todd Miller   {K:16461} 4/11/2005

arwa abdullah   {K:34425} 4/11/2005
its so flawless it looks more of a Venice painting than a Venice image!
The ideal view of this city painted by the best of artists :)
The mix between the old traditional shown in the buildings and gondolas and both the bus stops & the small motor boat adds interest
thilo I could look at this for hours!
Super good stuff ;)
7/7

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/11/2005
dear arwa,

thanks a lot for the emotional feedback... I really feel great now! =)

Perhaps it was good that this little picture hided itself in my archives... there are so many pictures online from me now that I would treat different. so I'm glad to get my weird hands on that one ;-)

take care and thanks for the latest dedication!

you're the super feedback wonder woman.

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/11/2005
Dear Gayle,

wow, what a feedback! I feel flattered, getting red and the whole stuff (you know!). now I'm really happy that some people here like the outcome... I was really kind of eager to bring it online when I found the picture yesterday in my archives...

take care,

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/11/2005

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/11/2005
Hi Giorgio,

I played around with IR, I have to admit ;-)

but the channel mixer does a great job as well.

best wishes,

thilo

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/11/2005

My best regards

Raf D   {K:10453} 4/12/2005
Not much more to add to all the great comments in this wonderful image. Excellent postproduction work. I love the colours! -- Kind regards, Rafael

Carsten Ranke   {K:14453} 4/14/2005
Being infected with the postcarditis virus myself, I can only agree with the raving comments. Besides, a very nice diagonal composition. But what is a critique without a nit-pick ...? The orange in the sky on the right lacks a bit luminance, IMO. Did you make a levels adjustment there ? What about a multiply blended layer mask ? Just an idea. Anyway, a brilliant picture.
Regards; Carsten

Thilo Bayer   {K:50301} 4/18/2005
Hi Carsten,

thanks for the indepth feedback. you're probably right with the orange... I'm just getting used to these kind of techniques. So next time, I will hopefully remember your idea =)

best wishes,

thilo
