About A clear night the other day and Ursa Major is near the zenith which, in my light polluted back yard it the only place that I can take long exposures without getting orange glow! Trying the long exposure of the camera.

Good capture of the stars. You are a very patient photographer.

Bryan Jarmain   {K:11941} 4/18/2005
James, I am surpised you didn't start getting streaking of the stars. Nicely framed.

James Silcock   {K:12501} 4/18/2005
Hi Bryan, thanks for your comment. Near the zenith with a 28mm lens (which is what the 18mm is on my 350D) you can use about 30 - 35 second exposures and only get the slightest streaking of stars. The nearer you are to "north" and the wider angle the lens used the longer exposures you can use without streaks and vice-versa.

Great Astro ! I guess you bought the XT. Did you strap it to a scope with an equatorial mount ?
BTW how do you like your new camera ?
Sal

Hi Sal, thanks for your comment. The new camera is great mate, so many features, I'm still on the learning curve with it but it produces some good looking results.

I didn't strap the camera to any type of mount just an average tripod, pointed it at the constellation and tripped the shutter for about 25 seconds.

Cheers

You captured it very well. Also, your presentation (framing) works wonderfully well. Well done. Kinda makes me want to try it but then I live in Central New York. We get maybe 10 clear nights in a year :-)

I also want to thank you for the congratulations on my shot taking Best Color Photograph. The image itself is in my portfolio if you care to see the shot in detail.
