Hi Tim, I find highly saturated photos in general very appealing, but I get the feeling it's a bit too much in this one, although it does justice on the rainbow. As usual an excellent composition, very well balanced, and a beautiful scenery. I'm impressed by the large quantity images in just over a year! I'm happy if I can upload three decent shots a week!

Hi Hugo,
Thanks for your critique, I have switched to a LCD monitor and I think that it is affecting what others see on line. I notice that if I look at the same posting on a CTR monitor the same image is generally darker and may have a different saturation. Aside from that I do saturate them in order to use these images for painting a landscape painting which generally are far more colorful then photos. This is the reason for cranking the color so much.
On another point the average person responds to color emotionally and I believe that is why saturation is appealing. The color helps convey the poor representation of the real thing that I am trying to capture. Through color, the image is transporting my feeling of what I am experiencing for you to respond to in your own way. To get no response positive or negative would mean that my attempt to stimulate you would have failed.

An almost poetic balance in this image Tim. You have a great sense of drama in your compositions. Why not try a B+W conversion some time??? Not with this image in particular, but perhaps one of your earlier posts such as "Wicked Winds" or "Wild One". Congrats.

Hi Richard,
Thank you I do on occasion convert to B/W to wonderful effect. Mostly the color images are preliminary studies for my paintings which is how I make a living....so color is the main interest for that reason.

Hi Tim, thanks for the interesting reply. You pose some good points. Looking at your (and other) images at a CRT monitor does indeed affect an image compared to a TFT / LCD monitor. Having just switched to a Mac, I have spent some time calibrating my monitor, and I notice the differences more clearly now too.
I know you use your images for your paintings, and I agree that a high colour depth / saturation is a good way to assess an image for those purposes. But on the level that a saturated image is more appealing to the "average" viewer (Which I hope I'm not one of, but I fear for the worst) I'm not sure I share your opinion.
As a photographic representation of any subject is merely a visual trigger to the mind (same as a painting, although that makes the textures of the canvas and brushstrokes more tangible), you strip the scene of some vital elements: the other senses (smell, feel, etc). Saturation and postprocessing are one way of compensating the loss of those triggers.
Despite possible differences in colour settings and monitors themselves, I still believe you did well here, eventhough I'm just an average viewer....;)

Come to think of it Tim, I had forgotten it was a B+W image ("Land of Odd" I think) that first attracted me to your work. Enjoyed your website too, maybe I can get to that Mississauga gallery to view your paintings this summer. Seeing it on a monitor does not do them justice.
